A smoothly functioning team?
The Blyth Festival technical crew gets into the theatrical spirit to have their picture taken.
When taken into custody they refused to provide a reason for the Klondike staging. (Please
note, no real chickens were harmed during the taking of this photo.) (David Blaney photo)

THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 5, 2002. PAGE 19.
A group which has backed up
musical legends including Canada's
first teen heartthrob, Bobby Curtola,
is visiting Goderich for the first
time.
The Martels are a band that
repeatedly sells out shows in the
select communities where they play.
The concert takes place at
Goderich Memorial Arena on
Saturday, June 29 during
Goderich's 175th birthday
celebration. The show is hosted by
the Goderich Lions Club.
The Martels '50s and '60s Rock
`II' Roll Show and Dance Party is
an historic rock show featuring
popular songs from that era. The
history of the Midland band dates
back to 1957 when a group of
teenagers formed The Corvettes.
Teen idol Bobby Curtola, the first
Canadian to receive a gold album
and famous for such hits as Corina
Corina and Fortune Teller, later
discovered the band.
A Night to Remember, featuring
The Ink Spots, The Four Lads and
The Mills Brothers is appearing in
Kitchener, London, Toronto and
Hamilton.
The Ink Spots career spans six
decades and features 80 chart hits
such as If I Didn't Care and I Don't
Want to Set the World on Fire.
The Four Lads launched their pro-
fessional career in Toronto — a career
that includes the sale of some 50
million singles and albums with
titles as well loved as Instanbul,
Standing on the Corner and
Mockingbird.
John H. Mills II tribute to the
musical legacy created by his father
and uncles better known as The
Mills Brothers, includes all the high-
lights such as Paper Doll, Glow
Worm and Ain't Misbehavin. John
Mills is joined on stage by Elmer
Hopper (familiar to Platters fans for
his 21 years performing with the
group).

The popular musical group also
appeared on bills with The
Stampeders, Gordon Lightfoot and
The Righteous Brothers among
others.
The band would go on to back up
stars including Del Shannon before
disbanding in the 1960s. The
Martels reunited for a single show
in 1979 and have been selling out
shows ever since.
The Martels include Tom Ambeau
(drum, guitars), Milt Budarick
(bass, guitar), Bert DesRochers
(piano), Landon French (vocals,
percussion), Madeleine French
(vocals, piano) Larry French (lead
guitar, vocals), Gary French (lead
vocals, drums) and sizzling
saxophonist Dr. Sax, aka Russ
Strathdee. Former 1960s disc
jockey Ken Rowland is emcee for
the show.

to become legendary. In the process,
Stompin' Tom, himself, has become
a true and lasting kind of legend
about which books are written and
he has penned two about his life, so
far.
During May and June, 2002 he is
performing a limited number of
shows (he refers to them as, "par-
