Brussels kept much of the play in their opponents' end early in the game and Thomas Johnston showed good defensive ability when Elma made a rush on goalie Andrew Lindsay. David Grobbink and Robert Cronin also helped clear the ball for their end. After two good tries on the Elma netminder by Brian Burgess, Gavin Bowers broke the stalemate. Burgess tallied the next two for the home team, getting help from Kelby Krotz and Bowers on good passing plays. Cameron Schlosser made a East Wawanosh school's Jump Rope for Heart event was a huge success with students raising $2,813 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. As a result of this effort, the school will receive a new portable stereo system for the gym and some phys. ed. equipment from the "HeartSmart" points earned. Many students have earned Gotchas this year for doing something positive for the school. Congratulations to Natasha Van De Waite, Stephanie Robinson, Tyler Hallahan, Trevor Raynard, Baillie Bell, Jamie Losch, Jillian Montgomery, Lacey McArter, Aaron Keunen, Sarah Young, Matthew Cottrill, Trevor Hopf, Adel Dodds, Jessica Lucas, Zackery Losch and Brooklyn Vercruyssen, who were chosen for the final Gotcha Lunch draw. Both kindergarten classes are off to the London Children's Festival on Thursday, June 8. The students will participate in a number of hands-on activities, which include crafts, a dance stage, face painters and strolling performers. The QSP/magazines fundraiser raised $4,272 and frozen food raised $1,140. Tracey Brohm is organizing volunteers to look after the Earth Friendly Gardens for the summer. The Volunteer Appreciation Tea will be held on Tuesday, June 25 after the awards ceremony. The Grade 4/5 and Grade 5/6 classes will be off to -Toronto to visit the Science Centre. On Tuesday, June 19, the students nice defensive play racing across the field and Lindsay was sharp in net. The floodgates opened in the second half when Brussels bulged the twine five times with no answer from Elma. Bowers worked his way through the crowd for a shot in close before Burgess netted two more. Lindsay used his speed to go in alone on net for Brussels' seventh goal and Johnston capped the scoring when he went cross net for the tally. Emily Warwick made a nice clearing play when facing three attackers. Brussels earned their first victory of the season with an 8-0 win. will have a chance to share the storybooks they have written and illustrated. They will also enjoy a visit from author Frank Glew, who raised in the Clinton area is a former teacher with the Waterloo Region District School board and who is now an author. The Grade 3 class will be joining the Grade 3/4 class from Turnberry Central Public School and wil visit the Stratford-Perth Museum to participate in the program called Ciphering On Slates — Welcome To A One Room Schoolhouse. The Grade 7/8 class will be visiting Sainte-Marie Among The Hurons in Midland on Wednesday, June 19. They will be participating in two programs entitled Royal Navy/War of1812 and Two Cultures: One Land. On Thursday, June 20 in the afternoon all students in Grades 4-8 will be participating in an intermural two-pitch tournament here at the school. The Grads I and 2 classes will be visiting the African Lion Safari near Cambridge on Friday, June 21. Students will be participating in Air Bands on Friday, June 21. The Grade 8 graduation banquet will be held on Monday, June 24 at the Belgrave Community Centre. A year-end assembly will be held on Tuesday, June 25 atl p.m. At this assembly there will be the presenting of public speaking awards, track and field awards, school teams and citizenship and honour roll awards for the classrooms. The Brussels Lawn Bowling Club met at the clubhouse Thursday, May 27 to plan the year's activities. Eleven membeis were present. President Yvonne Knight welcomed everyone and proceeded with the business. Jean Bewley read the minutes of the fall meeting. There is no vice-president at present and it is hoped that a member will volunteer. Catering was discussed and it was decided that since most tournaments start at 10:30 a.m. a light lunch was preferable to a complete dinner. Louise Bosman and Laura Johnston It was not a good week for the Wingham Bantam lacrosse team. - Tuesday, May 28 the' Wingham North Perth Bantams travelled to Arthur. Scoring Wingham's only goal was Cory Chapman mid-way through the third period. Arthur showed no mercy and by game's end had scored eight. _ Thursday night they played against Guelph, a team that hasn't lost any games all season. Guelph scored four goals in the first period. Wingham's Jason Hamilton scored on a breakaway Brussels U-7s played Howick II on Tuesday, May 28. The scoring started with a goal - from Tre Sanderson. Ethan Nichol nabbed the second goal. After being removed from netminding duties Anthony Lichty scored the third goal for Brussels. There were a few close calls then Brock McLean scored the fourth, fifth and final goal for Brussels. There was awesome goalkeeping 11 tables of bridge in play at senior games Eleven of tables of bridge were in play last Tuesday at the Belgrave Community Centre as the Belgrave Community Club hosted the Zone 29 senior games. Bridge players from Huron Perth and Middlesex Counties competed in the one-day event. Earning the gold medal with a score of 7790 (32 hands) was the team from St. Marys, Doug Brown and Bill Kilborn. They gave up their right to advance to Actifest to be held in Kingston in August. Claiming the silver medal and advancing to Actifest was the Strathroy duo of Lorraine Lamont and Dorothy Ferguson, with a score of 7010. The Lucan pair of Margaret Statesburg-Leeson and Bruce Gibbs took the bronze with a score of 5940. ' volunteered to prepare lunch for the tournament, Thursday, June 6. The club will pay for the food required. The Trillium Fund was discussed. Several clubs have received large amounts to buy equipment. Uxbridge received $4,000 to buy smaller bowls so young people with small hands and older people with arthritic hands could participate in the game. Some clubs received up to $20,000. Ontario Lawn Bowling Association will allow the club to use its incorporation number to apply. Bill Bremner, Ken Barbour, Yvonne Knight and Jean Bewley were named as a committee to shot in the final seconds of the period to get on the scoreboard. Chapman scored first in the second period on a pass from Hamilton and Dick Gregg. Guelph answered with four. Wingham held its own in the third period with Hamilton scoring two, Chase Chapman adding one and Cory Chapman getting the final Wingham goal with help from Hamilton. Guelph scored only three in the final period. The final score was 11-6 for Guelph. by. Lichty, Tani Cardiff, Brody Geddes and Jason Clarke to shutout Howick. Over the years members have met Monday and Thursday evenings. Some people have expressed interest in playing but have meetings Monday night. After a brief discussion it was decided to try bowling Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. and Thursday evenings in hopes that there might be more players. The club has several sets of bowls for visitors use.. Visitors are always welcome. The meeting adjourned to the greens for the first game of the season. Wingham's only game this week is Wednesday night against Elora at the North Huron Wescast Community complex.
