Huron East considers gravel pit proposal
By David Blaney
Citizen staff
The May 21 meeting of the Huron
East council began with several pub-
lic delegations scheduled but only
one attracted any ratepayers. About
10 people were on hand to discuss a
proposal to establish a gravel pit on
Jamestown Rd. just east of Brussels
Rd.
Kraemer Concrete Ltd. is propos-
ing to open a pit primarily to extract
gravel for their redi-mix concrete
business. They also said they would
sell gravel within the local market

It has been a very busy week at the
Brussels Legion Branch.
Comrade Al Nichol is home from
hospital and hopefully is feeling bet-
ter. Comrade Gord Workman is in
Seaforth hospital and Comrade
Doreen Rutledge- is in the Goderich
hospital.
Friday night's supper this week is
sausage.
Friday night was the joint installa-
tion of officers at the Seaforth
Branch 156. The new executive
begins its duties June 1. Branch 218
officers were installed by Seaforth
and then Branch 156 officers were
installed by Brussels. A social time
and lunch followed the service of
installation.
We would appreciate donations
for the silent auction being held at
the Branch be brought in during the
next week.
There were 10 tables of euchre
Players on Saturday afternoon. The
area if the opportunity arose.
They intend to remove approxi-
mately one million tonnes of aggre-
gate over the estimated ten-year life
of the pit.
The. total pit area would be
approximately 52 acres. They pro-
pose to progressively rehabilitate the
site so that at no time would the
whole area be an open pit.
Several neighbours expressed
concerns either- in writing or at the
meeting. Murray Bray, who attended
in person, was particularly con-
cerned over the possibility of con-
tamination to the ocal groundwater.
winning couple with 75 points was
Louise and Ross Bosman. The sec-
ond place couple was Eileen Mann
and Isabelle Gray with 71 points.
Coming in third place were Stuart
and Lois Chamney with 70 points.
The lucky lone hand winners were
Jean Smith and John Subject.
Euchre is every two weeks.
The auditorium was beautifully
decorated for the wedding of Terry
Buchanan and Judy Campbell on
Saturday afternoon. Following the
wedding a supper served by the aux-
iliary ladies and an open reception
was held. Congratulations to the
happy couple.
Sunday evening was the singles
dance. Over 100 people enjoyed the
music of the Country Versatiles.
The decoration service is Sunday,
June 23 at Brussels Cemetery.
Tombstone poppy emblems for vet-
erans' graves are available. Family
may pick them up at the Branch. The
service begins at 2 p.m.
He wanted assurance that surface
water would not be able to enter the
well on the pit property. Bray and
several others also sought assur-
ances that at no time would the site
be used for an asphalt plant.
Rob Stove!, a consultant for the
applicant stated that the well would
be tested each year and the results
made available to the municipality.
He also suggested that as one of the
applicants intended to live on the
property, it would be in their interest
to ensure the well was protected.
He also stated that although it was
possible that scrap asphalt would be
recycled at the site there was no
intention to establish an asphalt
plant. One of the Kraemers stated,
"We have no purpose to have an
asphalt plant and never will have an
asphalt plant (at the site)."
The Kraemers agreed to have the
zoning amended to prevent a plant at
the site. Cindy Fisher, of the county
planning staff, said special zoning
would be needed to allow a resi-
dence at the pit and council could
ban an asphalt plant at the- same
time.
The consultant also informed the
council that his clients were pre-
pared to establish a setback from the
well as long as it was in use. He said
that if the well were taken out of use
it would be decommissioned accord-
ing the Ministry of Environment
guidelines.
The question of dust control on
Jamestown Rd. was discussed and
John Forest the public works co-
ordinator said it would be necessary
to do the work more often if the road
was used more heavily than previ-
ously. He also said that the road was
probably underbuilt for that type of
load.
"I think it is going to be a major
problem for us to maintain that
road," he said, "especially at
100,000 tonnes, when it is going to
be done over six months." He
advised council that, "with that
amount of aggregate (one million
tonnes) over 10 years, I would sug-

No decision was taken concerning
the rebuilding of the road although
council and the consultant suggested
that the matter be the subject of fur-
ther discussions.
The company has agreed not to
extract gravel within 30 metres of
any watercourse and they have said
that the base of the pit will remain
five feet above the water table. They
have also agreed to amend their
operating hours so that the portable
crushing plant will not operate on
Saturdays, Sundays and statutory
holidays and Saturday crushing
operations will not begin until 7
a.m.
On a recorded vote council agreed
to support -the needed official plan
amendment in principle.
