THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, MAY 29, 2002. PAGE 11. Hawks win championship The Huron Hawks AAA Midget team competed in its third and final summer hockey tournament this past weekend in Oakville. They claimed the second annual Holiday Inn Memorial Championship by defeating the Rochester Americans 4-0 on Sunday afternoon. Darryl Houston scored the first goal with just over one minute to go in the first period. Jeff Hall got the assist on the eventual game winner. Neither team was able to score in the second period, but the Hawks came up with three more in the third to seal the victory. Scoring third period goals were Bob Raymond, Jared Wiseman, and Mark Stirling with assists going to Joe Nesbitt, Barry Young, Chris Blake, Hall, and Raymond. Matt Dalton made several key saves in recording the shutout. The Novice North Perth lacrosse team, which plays out of Kurtzville, but has numerous players from the Wingham, Listowel and Blyth area, has started its season. After winning the final game the team was presented with the championship trophy and each player received a fleece jacket. The tournament also provided individual awards to Nesbitt as most dedicated, Darrell McClure as most improved, and Hall as most sportsmanlike. The Hawks made it to the final by getting past the Perrington Blades, from New York, in the semi-final. The team had a very slow start to the tournament losing 4-0 to Rochester, and 6-0 to Perrington. In their third round-robin game the Hawks exploded for an 11-3 victory over ProbOund of Toronto. Scoring goals were Stirling with a hattrick, Wiseman and Nesbitt with a pair each, while Houston, Raymond, Blake, and Jamie Biggar each had one. Coaching the team were Jamie Thomas of Brussels, and George Carter of Lucknow. On May 16, the Novice Outlaws, played Fergus. The score was tied 3- 3 in the third, but a last-minute goal by Fergus edged the young novice squad. Scoring for the Outlaws were Steven Edwards, Ben Stapleton and Matt Chalmers. Assists came from Brock Hodgins and Edwards. There was great goaltending from Zak Ashley. On May 23, the Novices were doubled by Kitchener-Waterloo, 8-4. Scoring for the Novices were Ryan Errington, Edwards and Stapleton with two. Sheldon Reid added the assist to the Edwards goal. U-17s tie Wallace II The Brussels U-17 soccer squad was at home to Wallace II on May 23.
