Entertainment & Leisure Festival performer brings blues to town Former Blyth Festival performer and Ernie King look-a-like returns to Huron County with a hit Canadian blues act. Raoul Bhaneja, known to area audiences for his performance in Barndance Live! at The Blyth The Donnellys are back in town. Rehearsals for The Outdoor Donnellys — the Blyth Festival's outdoor extravaganza have beg- un. The cast and crew are excited to The Huron County Historical Society held its annual meeting on Thursday evening, May 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Kirkton-Woodham Community Centre. President Ross Duncan, Wel- comed everyone. The secretary, treasurer and membership reports were read. Officers elected are: president, Ross Duncan, Wingham; past presi- dent, David Yates, Goderich; secre- tary-treasurer, Rae McFarlane, Bayfield; membership chair, Jean Fraser, Ethel; publicity, Jean Fraser; councillors, Mac Campbell, Goderich; Ross Carter, Clinton; Joe Hogan, Exeter; David McClure, Grand Bend; Janeth Sangster, Hensall; Isabel Theedom, Clinton. For the year 2003 the membership fee will be increased to $15. An invitation was extended to an afternoon tea and tour for the Celebration of Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee at the Canadian Royal Heritage Museum (The Diefenbaker House) in Neustadt, ON from 1 - 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 2. By Lois van Vliet The Blyth Horticulture Society held its annual spring invitational meeting Monday, May 13 at Memorial Hail with 45 people in attendance including visitors from Brussels, Goderich, Clinton, Seaforth and surrounding area. Betty Battye, president, opened with a brief business meeting, wel- coming everyone. She told about a proposed stand-up plaque for the Horticultural Park on Dinsley Street. This would be the Society's contri- bution to the walk-about museum which is in the planning stages for Blyth's 125th anniversary. Continued from page 19 us right now." The hamlet of Kirkton is situated on the boundary between Usborne Twp. (Huron County) and Blandshard Twp. (Perth County) and was originally known as Kirk's Corners, being named after the five Kirk brothers who settled here. - In 1856 James and Timothy Eaton arrived and built a store here — the first Eaton store in Canada. When the post office was established in July 1856 this hamlet was called Kirkton. In 1860 Timothy Eaton moved to St. Marys where a ready supply of material was available. The hamlet of Woodham is also situated on the boundary between Usborne Twp. and Blanshard Twp. Development at this corner began when Walter Unwin opened .a store in 1859. This hamlet was originally known as Hamlet in the Woods. The following performances have bleacher seating available: June 13, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26 and 27. The Outdoor Donnellys will begin once again at the Blyth Fairgrounds, post office opened in March 1865. Previously the mail came to Kirkton and was picked up there. Churches, schools and many busi- nesses were built. Each settlement always accommodated the other in many ways. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the Huron County Museum in Goderich. The topic, The Great Lakts and Her Ships - a multi- media presentation including sam- ples of local heritage marine photog- raphy, is a presentation by Mac Campbell. This will be part of a 10-day Marine Heritage Festival in Goderich sponsored by the Huron County Museum and Port of Goderich Marine Heritage commit- tee (Sept. 20 - 29, 2002). The annual dinner meeting will be held jointly with the IODE on Friday, Oct. 25 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Goderich. Guest speaker Andrew C. Holman is the author of A Sense of Their Duty: Middle-Class Formation in Victorian Ontario Towns. Pruning is encouraging new growth where you want. He concluded with a question and answer period. Special musical entertainment was provided by the Huron String Ensemble featuring young violinists from Blyth and Goderich. Jessica Sparling, Emily Nicholson.
