Huron East WI celebrates 100 years 100 years of WI The HuronEast district Women's Institute celebrated its 100th annual meeting at the Ethel Hall on May 14. Over 60 delegates got together to go over the year's activities and plan the next year's program. (David Blaney photo) Hats, gloves, long skirts and some period costumes were the order of the day, Tuesday, May 14 when 61 members of the Women's Institute gathered in the Ethel Community Hall, to celebrate the district's centennial annual meeting. The theme for the meeting was In Friendship's Circle Bright. Molesworth Branch was the hostess's branch. Margaret McMachon, president, chaired the meeting assisted by secretary Ruth Bauer. The hall was decorated in the WI colours of blue and gold and displays from various convenors lined the walls. This included a collection of hats from the late Marion Johnston. The Gorrie . ladies welcomed everyone and registered members and guests. The Howick ladies made the centrepieces for the tables and distributed them at the end of the meeting according to the specified kind of hat .at each table. Muriel Matheson, Molesworth branch, welcomed everyone. The district directors were ratified by PAC Leone Foerter. Sharon Agla gave the financial report which was followed by the auditor's report. Congratulatory cards were read from Jean Chretien on behalf of the Government of Canada, Paul Steckle, MP for Huron-Bruce, Perth North District WI, Huron West WI, and branches from Huron East. Greetings were brought from Perth North by Everdina Bender; Huron West by Wilma Higgins; Huron South by Jane Dearing; Guelph Area First Vice-President, Cindy Rabstein; Winnie Mann, former FWIO board director; Mrs. Sparling from Goderich who was a president of Huron East District in 1944-45. The 100th anniversary certificate from FWIO was presented by Mrs. Foerter and a letter from Dianne Orr, president of FWIO was read. On behalf of the Walton and Majestic branches, Lucy Hesse, entertained in the morning with a point quiz and Mrs. Foerter and Mrs. Agla as Adelaide Hoodless and Erland Lee visited in the afternoon. Rev. Jeff Hawkins, also wearing . a hat and costume, entertained with his quick wit, songs and stories. Aleida Murray, Lakelet branch, conducted the "In Memoriam" and white carnations were placed in a vase with red carnations by the different branches who had lost valuable members throughout the year. Six members were deceased. Education co-ordinator report was prepared by Isabel Hyslop and read by Marjory Humphries, who also gave the PRO report; Tweedsmuir curator report was by Mrs. Foerter and the education committee report was by Kathy Bridge. Kim Higgins gave the Huron County 4-H report. Coins for Friendship were given as roll call. There was a two-minute presentation on the branch highlights over the year. Glenna Smith, past president of Guelph Area, was the guest speaker for this special day. She outlined the pre-conference workshops for the ACWW triennial conference in Hamilton in June 2001. The visiting delegates wanted to learn and share ideas so she shared the how, when, where and why of the convention. She asked members what they would like to see happen in each of their communities in the next five years. She was thanked by Darlene Harding and presented with a door wreath. Dates to remember are: May 27, Huron East District annual in St. Helen's; May 27, soup and sandwich lunch and euchre at noon in Fordwich Hall; June 19, 100th anniversary of Gorrie WI at 7:30 p.m. in the Gorrie Hall; Aug. 20, choir practice at 7:30 p.m., Molesworth Presbyterian Church; Aug. 26, Huron East district meeting at Marguerite Beirnes, Listowel; Oct. 7, County Rally in Belgrave; Oct. 23 and 24, Guelph Area Convention, Elma Community Centre, Atwood. The. anniversary cake was cut by Mrs. Sparling, Jean Mathers and Margaret McMahon and was served with ice cream, after a lunch of cold salads, catered by Beth Earl. Cindy Rabstein installed the officers for the district for the year 2002-2003. Payment of the fee to the Huron Historical Society, microfilming of the Tweedsmuir History Book, Volume 1 and a donation of $25 to the Erland Lee Museum Home in memory on the passing of a past district president brought the business to a close. In her president's address, Mrs. McMahon reminded all that the needs of 100 years ago are not the same as today. She asked members to meet new challenges head on and have social interactions with other women in friendship's circle bright. Marion Feldskov, Howick WI gave the courtesies and invited members to Howick for the 101st district annual on May 13. Business Director Help for Today. Hope for Tomorrow.
