Former teacher honoured for earthy contributions
On Wednesday, May 22 there will
be a school council meeting held at
Grey Central Public School at 7 p.m.
Thursday, May 23 is the school
track and field meet. Students who
place first or second in an event at
Grey will progress to the next level
of competition, which is the north
region track and field meet, to be
held at F. E. Madill in Winghani on
Thursday, May 30. The rain date is
May 31. Students who place first or
second at the regional level of com-
petition will advance to the Avon
Maitland district track and field
event as a member of the North
Huron team. The district meet will
be held at Mitchell District High
School on Wednesday, June 12.
On Friday, May 17 an assembly
was held at Grey Central to com-
memorate Earth Day. The focus of
the assembly was to honour Mr.
David Perrie for the many contribu-
tions he has made to environmental
education at Grey over the years.
Mr. Perrie taught at Grey for many
years before retiring. He has been
instrumental in establishing and
maintaining Grey's beautiful envi-
ronmental learning grounds. He con-
tinues to contribute to environmen-
tal education of Grey students and
staff through frequent visits to the
school.
He can often be found accompa-
nying a class on a learning adven-
ture somewhere in the woods, wet-
lands, meadows or down the beaver
trail near the river. He has also been
involved in providing in-service to
staff.
A model of a rock and tree that
will be placed on the school grounds
in honour of Mr. Perrie's contribu-
tions to environmental education at
Grey was shared with Mr. Perrie and
the school. The Earth Day assembly
included musical selections by the
Grade 6, 7 and 8s under the direction
of Mr. Rob Payne. The Grade 6s
sang The Garden Song. The Grade
7/8s sang Power and Mother
Nature's Song.
All students from kindergarten to
Grade 8 contributed a page to a very
large thank you book that was pre-
sented to Mr. Perrie. We would also
like to thank Mr. Steve Bowers for
attending our celebration and shar-
ing with us the numerous environ-
mental accomplishments of Mr.
Perrie in the community.
Following the assembly students
were paired with their reading bud-
dies for a nature walk and a clean up
of the environmental learning
grounds.
Mme. Colquhoun's classes will be
starting a new unit in French really
soon.
In Mrs. Scott's class, they learned
the letter V. They made vans and a
vase out of construction paper and
used tissue paper for the purple vio-
lets.
They went with Mr. Perrie for a
walk in the woods and learned about
five wildflowers
Mrs. Bowler's kindergarten class
is learning the sounds "ee" and "or".
In math, they are matching words
with numbers.
Miss Hill's classes are working on
doing.division and addition.
Mr. Park's class is making art
designs instead of doing track and
field.
The Grade 3s are happy to have
finished the EQAO testing. To cele-
brate the end of testing, they had a
party with cake and candy, and they
watched a movie. They are studying
chance in math.
Mrs. Murray's Grade 4s are study-
ing British Columbia in social stud-
ies. In science, they are continuing
their study of light.
The Grade 4s showed the Grade
Is the baby raccoon and mothei that
they had seen during the week when
they went through the woods with
Mr. Perrie.
On Friday, it was Pajama Day.
Mrs. Elliot's outfit was completed
with crocodile slippers and curlers
in her hair.
Friday, May 17 is Kalem
Hammermueller's birthday.
The Grade 6 class finished up
their EQAO testing on Tuesday. On
Wednesday, they celebrated the end
of testing by watching a square
dancing video and going on a nature
walk with Mr. Perrie. Their time
with Mr. Perrie was spent learning
about trees and flowers in the
woods.
Miss Henry's class has been
attempting to get ready for Track
and Field, however the weather has
been making that very difficult.
Next week will be one of the busiest
because they have Tech 21 and track
and field. As for academics, the
Grade 7 class has been studying
Atlantic Canada and the Prairies,
looking specifically at the physical
landscape and resources.
As well, they are finishing a sci-
ence unit on resources on ecosys-
tem, and the test for this unit will be
May 31.
Mr. Payne's Grade 7/8s are being
taught history by Mr. Stretton. Mr.
Stretton is the Grade 6's morning
teacher.
