The Earthmaker, God, has
entrusted gifts into the hands of each
of us. You and I are God's stewards.
Each gift we have received holds a
mystery, a promise.
When we bring those gifts into the
life of the church and return them to
their source, this is an act of faith, an
act of stewardship. God, who created
the world and us as a part of it, will
take our gifts and use them to create
magnificent things.
Thanks be to God.

Knox United Church, Belgrave
Early morning, I sat in my office
listening to a robin's song greet a
new day. Sun rays enhanced tulips

A story, whose origins I have
forgotten, came to mind. It goes like
this:
Once upon a time, a very long
time ago, the Earthmaker brought a
gift to the people who inhabited the
land created by the Earthmaker. To
each, the Earthmaker gave three
small objects, all alike.
The merchant took his objects,
sold them and invested the money. A
juggler noted that the objects were
round so used them in his juggling
act to delight people.
The gardener, a steward of the
earth, looked at the objects saw
something the merchant and juggler
did not. He recognized that he held a
mystery, a promise in his hands.
Surely, if he planted these small
bulbs, the Earthmaker would cause
something wonderful to grow.
So the gardener planted the gifts
the Earthmaker gave him. Then he
waited. Fall turned into winter. In
the harshness of winter, the gardener
wondered if the Earthmaker was
really doing anything with the
offering he had planted in the brown
earth. But the gardener kept hoping,
kept believing.
Then spring arrived. Green shoots
broke through the earth and in time
the Earthmaker grew a wonderful
