Tie starts season of ffor Brussels U-11 squad
It was a cold and blustery start for
the Brussels U-11 soccer team when
they travelled to Newton, May 14.
Brussels started strong, keeping the
ball in their opponents' end for much
of the first half. The first good shot
on net came from David Grobbink
who carried the ball from centre and
along the sideline, but the shot went
wide.
The Wingham North Perth
Bantams lacrosse team travelled to
Elora May 13.
Elora started the scoring with less
than five minutes left in the first
period. In the final few seconds
Jason Hamilton scored for Wingham
on a pass from Xavier O'Krafta to
Randy Zwep, Gavin Bowers and
Thomas Johnston also had good
chances early in the game. Kelby
Krotz got a nice shot off and Robert
Cronin showed some good footwork,
while Chris Becker made a nice
clearing shot before Brussels netted
their first goal.
Brian Burgess scored on a solo
effort. He tallied his second of the
end the period in a tie.
The stronger passing Wingham
team dominated the rest of the game.
Cory McDonald scored on a pass
from Chase Chapman and the strong
duo of Cory Chapman and Hamilton
found the net twice each with a goal
and an assist in the second and third
game minutes later when he picked
up his own rebound. Krotz assisted
on the push to the het.
Down 2-0, Newton I evened the
score after working their way
through the defence. Bowers, with
help from Zwep and Grobbink, put
Brussels up 3-2 before the half-time
whistle.
Burgess, Cronin and Heather Hill
periods. Hamilton wrapped up the
scoring for Wingham with a hattrick
for himself on an unassisted goal.
Elora was allowed to score one
final goal before the end of the
game. The score at the end was
Wingham 5, Elora 2.
Another road trip Thursday night
took the team to Fergus. Wingham
surprised the home team and scored
three goals in the first period.
Scoring for Wingham were Cory
Chapman on a pass from Hamilton,
Chase Chapman with Chris
Crawford assisting and Hamilton on
a pass from the goalie, Justin
Thompson.
Penalty minutes for both teams
took away from scoring for much of
the remainder of the game. Fergus
however, found a way to infiltrate
the tiring Wingham squad and
scored one late in the second and
two more in the last five minutes of
the third, to end it in a 3-3 tie.
Fergus comes to Wingham on
Thursday night at 8 p.m.
U-13s lose
The only home game for Brussels
soccer fans last week was the U-13
squad.
Hosting Elma II, the local team
came up a little short, losing by 5-
3.
pushed towards the opponents' net
several times in the second half, but
were unable to net the ball. Cronin
had a near miss when the ball refused
to roll over the goal line. Matthew
Cardiff, Cameron Schlosser and
Emily Warwick played strong
defence, clearing the ball away from
the crease.
Newton tied the score late in the
game and in spite for good efforts by
Brussels, including a near hattrick by
Burgess; they were unable to gain the
win.
, Andrew Lindsay and Grobbink
shared time in net.
Strong play and team work was
shown by Nicholas Durrel I,
Annamieka Kerkhof, Vanessa Ropp,
Elli Schimanski, Felicia Souch,
Denise Thalen and Josh Thalen.
The U-11 s play Tuesdays at 7 p.m.
