THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, MAY 22, 2002. Former Brussels resident opens bridal shop Most brides don't use their wedding as the jumping off point for a business. Julie (Campbell) Stratton, a Brussels native, so enjoyed planning her own wedding that she decided to see if she couldn't combine that interest and enjoyment into a business. The idea that started with her 1998 wedding came to fruition when she opened Julianne's Bridal and Formal Wear in Goderich earlier this year. Stratton had always wanted to have the business in an old Victorian house and with the help of her contractor husband and his father she saw that dream come true when Julianne's opened its doors at 44 Victoria St. S. She received help with her business from both her mother and mother-in-law. "It has been great to have two great mothers who have stood by me," she says. She has also received help from friends including Tammy King of Brussels who is in the shop a couple of days each week. Stratton is well versed in the art of helping a wide variety of people, after spending 17 years in the travel industry. She has been a travel consultant, tour planner and has worked at resorts in Tennessee and Banff. She has spent the previous seven years with Ellison Travel and will continue to work there part- time. Stratton wants to provide "small town personalized professional service." She says that planning a wedding is stressful enough without a bride having to travel out of town every time an alteration to a bridal dress is needed. She feels that the unique atmosphere of the converted Victorian house helps customers relax. She wants patrons to be able to have a memorable experience as they chose a wedding dress and not just a shopping trip. The shop has been busy from the beginning with Stratton not only providing bridal gowns but dresses for mothers-of-the bride and bridesmaids. She deals with five different suppliers in Europe, Canada and the United States. • " She is also prepared to provide dresses for any formal occasion and has been busy outfitting young women for school formals and graduation. Stratton has .a wide selection of colours and styles for the upcoming prom season. Although she does not yet stock tuxedos she says that in the future she would like the business become a one stop shop for the bridal party's needs. Laughter, the Best Medicine®. Although my cooking tends to be bland, soggy or over spiced, my husband never complains. One day I was lamenting the failure of my last meal when Pierre, eager to show encouragement, quickly said: "It was a great meal! It gave me a real sense of accomplishment to finish it." -Erika Cheng C. NI 11 R.:ader's I )igc,r, www.readersdigest.ca
