THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, MAY 22, 2002. At the Branch By Jo-Ann McDonald It was quiet at the Brussels Legion Branch this past week as things are winding down. The Cadets practised at the BM&G community centre for their upcoming inspection. The Friday night supper of chicken wings had the best turnout ever. -This week is roast pork. Comrades Doreen Rutledge and Al Nichol are in Goderich and Wingham hospitals respectively. Comrade Jim Brown survived his surprise 50th birthday party on the weekend and doesn't look any older. Don't forget that the installation of the new executive is Friday evening in Seaforth. All members are invited to attend at 8 p.m. The Branch is holding a co-ed ball tournament June 15. If you are interested and have a team call John Harrison or Sandra Josling. Watch for the Branch's silent and live auction Friday, June 7 and Saturday, June. 8. Members who have not responded are requested to do so immediately. • Well did you dig your long johns out to celebrate the long weekend? It was very strange weather going from sunny and warm to rain then snow in pretty quick time much to everyone's amazement or horror depending on whether you were tenting or trying to get crops in. Congratulations to Garry. Yuill and his bride Beatrice Yeh, who were married at Windemere Manor, London, on Sunday. Brussels folk in attendance were Garry's aunt Juanita Smith, her husband Doug Dale and their daughter Marlene; Steve and Holly McCutcheon; Jason Gropp and his friend Lisa McLellan of Huron Park, and Mark and Bonnie Gropp. Acting as best man was Garry's brother Glenn, now of Toronto. Mr. and Mrs. Yuill are residing in British Columbia. OPP target bad drivers Until May 31, the OPP are participating in the annual aggressive driving campaign. Officers will be strictly enforcing aggressive driving offences such as: speeding, following too close, unsafe lane changes, improper signalling, and disobeying traffic controls, in particular — red light and stop sign running. "We will focus on locations with high numbers of crashes, complaints, or congestion", says Traffic Sergeant Chris Whaley of the Field and Traffic Support Bureau. "This campaign is important because aggressive drivers don't see themselves as the problem. That's what contributes to them being aggressive. They blame everyone else." Motor vehicle collisions are avoidable. They are caused by the actions people take and the way they drive. The OPP wants help in keeping roads safe. Obey the rules of the road, expect delays so plan ahead, and report aggressive drivers. We're into the exciting season of Pentecost in the church year and making it special on Sunday the Brussels United folks welcomed five young members. Each one of them took part in the service as they celebrated the symbols of this season. Candles were lit and vows exchanged as families and friends watched Jennifer Stangen, Matthew White, Victoria Stangen, Ellen Workman and Jeff Zehr become members of the United Church of Canada. An article in The Kitchener Record this week mentioned that less than .,,half of the secondary students have started their volunteers hours. Only 40 hours are required in the four years, but they are needed to graduate. The purpose of this required 40 hours is to show kids the role of volunteers in community and to show them the satisfaction of volunteering in places you enjoy. Summer is a good time to get your hours started and it just happens that Kids Corner (Vacation Bible School) needs volunteers. Give Jill Sholdice 887-6836 a call and get your hours started. Have fun with the kids — the week of Aug. 5 - 9 in the afternoon. Adult helpers are needed as well. Call Jill or talk to your church representative. The theme this year is Shipwrecks and Dreams. Sounds like fun. Enjoy the gardens. Bye now, Betty G. W. Best turnout ever for wing night Squeaky clean It was a hardy Grade 8 group who spent time raising funds with a car wash at the parking lot of Brussels Village Market on Saturday. There were also hot dogs to enjoy. (Vicky Bremner photo)
