Anyone visiting the Black Sheep
Studio in Varna this summer may get
a sense of deja vu.
Glimpses of Huron Coimty can be
seen in an exhibit of photography by
Walton-area woman, Janice Becker.
The 10, 8x10 black and whites
feature shots taken from the "last 10
years of driving around the
countryside," she says.
While some of the pictures are
scenic, the majority are close-ups of
nature.
Becker's interest in photography
developed 25 years ago because of
her father. -
"I'm following in his footsteps,"
she explains, adding that her father
has been a photographer for more
than 50 years.
Coming to the country from the
city opened her eyes to nature. "It
definitely got me looking at things
up close. I tend to prefer that style of
photography."
Her interest in black and white,
however, has grown over the past 10
years because of her work as a
reporter/photographer with The
Citizen. Many ofAer photos were
printed on the editorial page. "It
enabled me to see the landscape
from a different perspective."
Interestingly, it was her job that
brought her to the Varna studio as
well. Working on a story for The
Citizen's tourist guide, Becker met
Fraser Aylsworth and Catherine
Abel, owners of Black Sheep. While
discussing their work, Becker
mentioned her photography.
Then a couple of months later
Aylsworth contacted her to see if she
would be interested in bringing some
examples over so he might have a
look.
Becker says that until recently
photographs had never been
exhibited at the Studio. Then, last
year a Belgrave woman had
exhibited her colour shots there and
Becker says, Aylsworth thought the
black and whites might be worth a
try.
Having taken such pleasure in
capturing nature on film, Becker is
hoping the pictures will do the same
for others. She feels that some of the
scenery shots would be easily
recognizable, and hopes people will
go out to the Studio to have a look.
With about 100 photographs in her
supply, is it likely that she will ever
run out of inspiration?
"Absolutely not. Everytime I drive
along these roads, I see something
and think I should stop to get a
picture."
Black Sheep Studio is open
weekends until July and August
when it will be open Tuesday
through to Sunday.
