PAGE 15. From the Minister's Study Holy Spirit gives direction to directionless By Rev. Richard Golden Monkton United Church As a child I remember the toy ships and submarines that came in boxes of cerear. They usually needed a little assembly and were to be used in a large area of water such as a bathtub. All you had to do was supply some baking soda and vinegar. When the two were placed in the proper parts of the ship and it was assembled properly, a chemical reaction would cause the ship to move under its own power. It was fun. This Sunday is Pentecost, the day we remember the Holy Spirit came down in tongues of flame to fill the followers of Jesus who were gathered together. Jesus had ascended into heaven a few days before, but he had promised he would not leave those who followed him orphaned or alone. This coming of the Holy Spirit was the Advocate sent by God on Jesus' behalf, that those who loved him would never he alone. The Holy Spirit was, and is, so much more, coming as hundreds of tiny flames settling on those gathered, filling them with the Holy Spirit. Thirteen members from Huron- Perth Presbyterial of the Women's Missionary Society attended the two-day, Southwestern Synodical annual meeting held in Knox Church, St. Thoma this past month. The theme of the meeting was Touch the World - Weaving, Sewing, Caring, Loving and Hoping. President, Carol Mackowski, Southampton, conducted the meeting and a welcome was extended by the Rev. Dr. Hum- an. The theme speaker on Tuesday afternoon was the Rev.„Karen Horst, minister at Knox Cfiurch, Strat- ford. She spoke on her work with the World Council of Churches and the Presbyterian World Service and Development committee, noting some of the good things accomplished and some of the mistakes the Christian churches have made when trying to help under-privileged countries. The music director of the church, Wayne Carroll, explained the ambitious music program at Knox AN2MMMMMMM www.tcc.on.ca/-dowfam 1MINDIMIWIPMWIPMMI,. An amazing thing happened; people who had gathered in fear, behind locked doors, and were timid became filled with power and strength. They were filled with a desire to go out and spread the word of the love of Jesus, the life giving, life changing power of Jesus. They were no longer afraid. They became a force to be reckoned with. The Holy Spirit ignited what God and Jesus had placed there. The Holy Spirit ignited a passion for Jesus and for God the people had been afraid to show; now they were without fear in proclaiming the Good News of Jesus. As a child when the vinegar was added to the baking soda, a chemical reaction caused the boat or submarine to move, sometimes very quickly at first before the fuel was spent. When the Holy Spirit touches our lives it is so much more than a little vinegar being added to baking soda. While the Holy Spirit fills us with power and energy to do God's work, the Spirit also needs nourishing and encouraging. The Holy Spirit is sustained not by simple chemicals, but by prayer, faith, study, and a Church, and with two of his band members, and a soloist, provided music for Tuesday evening, using piano, guitar, and percussion instru- ments. Rev. Dr. Human conducted the communion service. Huron-Perth Presbyterial was in charge of the worship on Wednesday morning. Using the theme, Touch the World, Shirley Aitcheson, Stratford, presided and gave the meditation. Bernice Richards, Stratford, read scripture and Pat Hogerwaard, od Atwood, led those assembled in prayer. Eunice Bisset, Goderich played genuine love of God and Jesus first and others as you love yourself second. The Holy Spirit in our lives does many things vinegar and baking soda can't, and the main one is provide direction to a directionless life. Prayer, being close to God and the Holy Spirit, will provide that direction, for God. Jesus and the Holy Spirit all love you more than you will ever know. As our toy vessels are surrounded by water, so too are we surrounded by the love of God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. God• does not leave us alone; God, also comes to us through a loving and caring faith community. God knows we need the support of other humans who also love God, and their neighbours. Jesus told His disciples and through them us, that He would not leave orphaned those who love Him. God sent the Holy Spirit, and works through those around us so we are not alone. Oper. your hearts and minds this Sunday, to the power of the Holy Spirit who will work in us and through us every day of the week. Thanks be to God. the piano for the hymns and also for the In Memoriam, which was conducted by Shirley Aitcheson and Janet Gibson, of St. Marys. Attending from Huron-Perth as delegates were Jean Evans, Janet Gibson, Eunice Bisset, Shirley Aitcheson, Ruth Laing, Pat Hogerwaard, Bernice Richards, Mary Duffin, Shirley Huckins, Marlene Starkey, and Sheila Cochrane. Also attending were Evelyn Matthison and Marlene MacGill- vray. The Southweatern Synodical in 2003 will be held in the Maitland Presbyterial at Wingham.
