Blyth ward councillors oppose suggestion

A suggestion that the North Huron
Wescast Community Complex be
made available to Wescast for its
100th anniversary celebration at no
charge did not sit well with at least
two North Huron councillors.
Having heard the recommendation
from the Complex advisory
committee report at the Monday
night meeting of council, Councillor
Murray Nesbitt questioned what the
reason was for not having them pay
for the use of the facility. He
explained that service clubs make
donations to the arenas and still pay
to rent them.

the municipality could do to help
them with the celebration. "This was
what came up."
"I think it's all a bad, idea," said
Nesbitt.
Councillor Archie MacGowan,
who, is chair of the committee, said
that certainly such a move would not
normally be done, but in lieu of
Wescast's monetary generosity
towards the complex, it was a way to
give something back.
Layton stressed that this was just -
one idea Wescast had and that the
event was in the planning stages.
Nesbitt's concerns were reiterated

valid point Nesbitt had made
regarding Other organizations --and
expressed his concern that this
would set a precedent. "I understand
the level of generosity from Wescast

but you could have other clubs
coming and saying, 'well we put

Nesbitt added, "I'm not a

North Huron council wants the-
Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority to investigate all options
before shutting down the Wawanosh
Conservation Park.
Councillor Jim Campbell, the
municipality's representative on the
MVCA board told council Monday
night that the park, which had been
purchased from the municipality for
$1 in 1980, had been a losing
proposition for the conservation
authority.
For the past 20 years the site had
been operated as a campground, but
the number of seasonal campers had
dropped to the point where the costs
exceeded revenue. According to
Campbell it lost $10,000 last year.

Wescast was at this point Just
looking at options.
Layton added, "It was a gesture,
what we could do to help them out
on their 100th year."
The board made a motion to see if
North Huron was interested in taking
back ownership. If not a security
gate would be installed, as well as
signs saying the site was closed to
campers. In 2003, they would restore
it to a natural area and remove the
buildings.
Campbell said that 18 campers
have asked to use the site for this
year, saying they would absorb all
costs. He also said that someone had
expressed interest in purchasing the
campground but MVCA was
doubtful that they could bring it up
to government standards. "If MVCA
can't do it, they can't imagine how
anyone else can," said Campbell.
Council made a motion that
MVCA carefully consider the
proposal from the prospective buyer
before rejecting it.
