And when you do find some time, who wants to spend it cleaning the house? Finding time to do a thorough home cleaning may be a challenge, but today there are lots of ways to make cleaning speedy, effective, and above all, convenient. Timesaving methods, however, should not lessen the effectiveness of a clean-up. "It's important that people still remember to disinfect when doing touch-up cleaning," says Joe Rubino, a microbiologist and expert on killing germs. "Developing a fast, efficient routine that cleans and disinfects your home makes every minute of your time count." Rubino offers people-on-the-go the following down-and-dirty tips to cut cleaning time in half while protecting hygiene. • Let the sunshine in. Open bathroom windows after showering to help prevent the growth of mold and mildew, which survive best in dark, damp areas. Regularly airing out of bathrooms will help prevent build-up and keep rooms fresh., • Out, dirt spot! Dirt, grime and germs linger on a wide variety of surfaces, but you don't have to tackle each one separately. Simplify cleaning by relying on products that can be used all around the house. Disinfecting wipes are ideal for quick wipe-downs of doorknobs, telephones, toys, countertops and almost any other surface. Plus, wipes kill bacteria like salmonella as well as other odour-causing germs that lurk in frequently touched places. • Call in the troops. Even kids can lend a helping hand when it comes to cleaning. Give children responsibilities like regular light dusting or tidying to help them learn lasting cleaning habits. Challenge kids to find the nooks and crannies where dust collects, and show them how to properly use the cleaning tools that get the job done fast. • Conserve your energy. Save time with products that don't require scrubbing, wiping or rinsing. Place a tablet in the tank of your toilet to help clean and sanitize your tank continuously for an extended period of time. Some products kill 99.9 per cent of germs for three months. That's three months of your time and energy saved! Cleaning and disinfecting doesn't have to be a time- consuming chore for you if you find a routine that's easy and convenient. Use an instant- read food thermometer to check that the middle of the burger reaches 71°C (160°F). Insert the food thermometer through the side of the thickest burger, into the middle of the patty. Your burger's done at 71! - News Canada
