TV host tells how to brighten home for spring
(NC)—Lynda Reeves, host of
HGTV's House and Home, knows
that with spring comes a desire for
fresh touches that bring the ease and
lightness of spring into your home.
Reeves suggests several great ways
to turn your cozy winter abode into
a brighter, cleaner space.
Add Colour
An injection of bright colour is the
best bi'l'k-me-up for a room that is
feeling a little drab. This spring's
most popular colours are citrus
green, canary yellow and sea blue.
Try incorporating these colours by
using throw pillows on a cream, tan
or brown sofa. Spring flowers are a
simple way to experiment with the
(NC)—John Sillaots, host of In the
Workshop on HGTV, nails down a
few practical ideas to help you
protect and enjoy your backyard
deck this season.
To start, Sillaots recommends
cleaning your wooden deck each
spring, as the leaves that have been
lying on the deck over the winter
can leave slippery and unattractive
stains. These stains can be removed
quickly and easily with a
commercial deck wash available at
your local hardware store.
To determine whether the surface
needs to be resealed, simply use a
watering can to pour water over
different areas of the deck. If the
water pools or beads, like water on a
newly waxed car, the wood is still
well protected. If the water soaks
into the wood, it is time to apply
another coat of protective finish or
water sealer. Remember to check
again in mid-summer, as direct
sunlight can wear down finishes
more -quickly and cause wood to
crack.
If this is the spring to build a new
deck, make sure to leave enough
space for airflow underneath and
Make
gardening
a family affair
(NC)—Gardening is an activity
that the whole family can enjoy
together. Children are fascinated to
see nature develop and bloom — by
inviting your kids to help you in
the garden you'll not only gain
quality family time, you may
introduce your child to a life-long
hobby.
How to get the kids involved:
• Consider the age of your
children when deciding how they
will participate. Younger kids will
enjoy planting flowers alongside
you, whereas older children can
help with tasks like watering
flowerbeds and mowing the lawn.
• Set aside a special plot for a
child's garden. If space is an issue,
consider a window box garden
with herbs or spices that children
can plant and maintain.
• Create a special space in the
yard where children can feel at
home. Kid-sized furniture can
provide,a mini-patio that's perfect
for a lemonade break on a hot day.
By choosing hardy, kid-friendly
plants and the right tools, you can
make gardening a family affair —
and create lasting memories along
with a great garden.

power of colour. A bunch of yellow
tulips in a green glass vase provides
a wonderful hit of colour.
Spring Cleaning
Throw out your beaten up front
door mat and replace it with a
natural sisal or brush mat, or one of
the new woven mats in black or
natural straw colour. Take a good
look at your bookcases. Dingy
books, worn memorabilia and tired
looking picture frames should go. If
you're reluctant to he ruthless, put
them away in a box and see if you
miss them.
Refresh
Refresh your curtains. The fabric
may be fine, but the header may
between the boards. Blocking off
ventilation can cause the wood to
rot prematurely which will reduce
the life of your deck.
Finally, if you love the look of a
cedar deck but can't afford the
higher lumber costs, Sillaots offers
a solution. To save a little money,
build the understructure with
pressure treated lumber, and use
cedar for the surface and any other
exposed areas. This will shave
dollars off the finished project.
need to be updated in a softer, looser
style. Consider replacing the old
painted wooden rod or the hidden I
beam with a newer looking, thin
black iron rod with simple ball
finials. Trim your solid coloured
curtains with a contrasting colour of
ribbon and re-line them in the same
colour.
Re-frame
Re-frame and re-mat your prints.
Try to create a grouping of identical-
sized, black frames with clean,
cream-coloured matting. It's a great
way to give old pictures a newer,
more graphic appeal.
Replace

solid colour or a print that you love.
Sew matching accent pillows to
place in front of your pillow covers.
Create a new slipcover for your dog
or cat bed in a bright spring colour
or a charming fldral print or toile.
Change your lampshades. Even
switching from black or cream silk
to the new craft paper shades will
add a more casual, summery feel to
your lamps.
Don't be afraid to experiment.
Summer fabrics and accessories are
generally less expensive. It's a great
time to try some hold fabrics on
small, soft accessories like seat
cushions, duvet covers and throw
pillows.
