Retirees find perfection in former gravel pit
By Bonnie Gropp
Citizen editor
While everyone knows the world
isn't perfect, the Lees believe they
have found something about as close
as you can get.
The retirees have enjoyed what
some might think an idyllic lifestyle
for many years. Having retired from
their Walton-area farm some 14
years ago, the couple spent their
summers working on a sailboat, then
'wintered on their own boat in
Florida.
However, in January of 2000, a
turning point came when Joan was
struck with double pneumonia. "I
thought this is ridiculous and told
Ron we should retire. Right there he
picked up the phone and it was
done."
The plan was to return to Ontario
and find their dream property. One
day, while sitting on their boat, Ron
had doodled a picture of what type of
setting he would like to spend
retirement in. They found it that June
in East Wawanosh Twp.
Originally the couple had thought
of northern Ontario, but couldn't
find anything that suited. Also, their
family wanted them to stay closer.
When they came upon the East
Wawanosh property the search
ended. "We sat at the road and just
knew," said Joan.
"The view, the land, the fact that it
was on a dirt road in the country, the
fact that it was hilly, something just
grabbed us," said Ron.
Speaking about his earlier
doodling and the fact that the only
water is the Maitland River, which is
a 15-minute walk away, Ron added,
"It has everything else, more than we
ever dreamed a place could have."
The place is 3.7 acres on a one-
time gravel pit, comprised of areas much of the property affording a
