oldest women's organizations in the
nation.
A number of area WIs are marking
a century of service this year, and
members are reflecting on past
achievements and looking ahead to
future needs.
Huron East District WI will
celebrate its centenary on May 14 at
the Ethel Hall, with the theme, "In
Friendship's Circle Bright."
From its beginning in 1902, the
Huron East District WI membership
focused on education, support and
friendship. At one time the district
had 17 WI branches. However, some
left of join Huron West District.
Currently there are eight active
branches. In recent years, as rural
populations have declined, a number
of urban Women's Institute branches
have been formed.
The motto for all Women's
Institutes is "For Home and
Country."
Some achievements of the WI
organizations include: successful
lobbying for pasteurized milk,
yellow highway markings, and
against bovine growth hormone for
dairy cattle.
