North Huron council briefs
North Huron approves hiring of treasury assistant
Getting better
North Huron council at its
April 15 meeting approved
the hiring of a a full-time
treasury assistant.
Clerk-Administrator John
Stewart told council that the
consultant during
amalgamation had advised
council could hire one more
part-time or full-time person
in treasury. At the time it was
felt that Transition Director
Winona Thompson could fill
in where needed.
Thompson, however, will
soon be retiring, Stewart said.
'Also, water billing, which
originally was not going to be
done from the office but is,
takes up about three-quarters
of one person's time, hesaid.

Council awarded the
contracts for the construction
work on the Blyth and
District Community Centre to
the bidders recommended by
project manager, Paul
Jackson.

Another letter received
from the Blyth Legion Ladies
Auxiliary expressing
opposition to the•replacement
of seats at Blyth Memorial
Hall was, after some
discussion, filed.
Council had made a
unanimous decision at a
previous meeting to allow
Blyth Festival to install the
new seats. Having received.a
phone call from the Legion
president after that motion
was made, Councillor Murray
Nesbitt went and tried out the
new seats and said he
"doesn't see anything wrong
with them."
Councillor Jeff Howson
said he too had spoken to
various Legion people and
felt that the majority really
were not opposed to the
change. "We made a motion. I
thought all has been said and
done."
***
Despite the decision to
maintain the Wingham police
force for that ward, while
contracting with the OPP for
Blyth and East Wawanosh,
council felt it was important
they have a representative at a
meeting to discuss a county-
wide police contract. "I feel
strongly that we have
representation. I think we
want to be part of the whole
information process," said
Howson.
Reeve Doug Layton and
Councillor Jim Campbell are
attending the meeting, which
is to he held April 25 in
Clinton.

While Central Huron has
opted out of the Blyth and
District Community Centre
agreement, the municipality
has said it would contribute
$15,000 to the operating
costs, said Stewart.
This however, does not
match what the municipality
would pay if it was based on a
usage percentage, he added.
Thus while Morris-Turnberry
is still committed to the arena,
Stewart said there will have to
be a discussion on how costs
will be shared.
"I'm not sure how they can
pay by percentage if Central
Huron isn't. It works out to
about the same amount, but
Central Huron has about
twice as many kids using the
facility as Morris-Turnberry,"
he explained.

Stewart and Adams will
attend the AMO new
Municipal Act training May
29 in London at a cost of
$187.25 per person.

Council endorsed a
resolution from the Twp. of
Otonabee-South Monaghan to
petition the Minister of the
Solicitor General to remove
any response time criteria in
reference to rural Ontario.
***
Council allocated $500 to
Road Watch.
***
A donation in the amount of
$250 will be given to the
Belgrave, Blyth, Brussels
School Fair board.
***
Council authorized a
donation of $500 to the
Wingham firefighters July 1
fireworks display.
***
Council was informed that
judging for Communities in
Bloom will be done July 29 in
Blyth and July 30
Wingham.

Following an in-camera
session, council accepted the
offer to purchase the
Lockridge Memorial Arena.
