Small engine quick tips
(NC)-After a winter tucked away in an unheated garage,
it's not surprising that your lawn mower, outboard or other
small engine fails to start. Follow these simple tips to
avoid having to trundle it off to a mechanic:
• Check to see that the spark plug is connected and inspect
the wires for cracks or rust.
• If the connections look good, check the condition of the
plug itself. Tough starts - and rough operation - are often
caused by fouled or worn spark plugs.
• Look for a blackened or dirty plug, gap erosion, a
cracked ceramic insulator, rust or corrosion.
If the plug needs to be changed, Autolite Small Engine
Spark Plugs give great performance over the life of the
plug. For more engine care information please visit the
Autolite website at www.autolite.com or call the toll-free
technical number 'at 1-800-333-1106.

Simple tips to get your car ready for the road

(NC)-Once the last patch of
snow melts and tulips push
their way up through the
ground, it's a sure sign that
spring is almost here. All
across Canada, the first warm
weekend triggers a symphony
of soapy sponges, garden
hoses and cleaning products.
But while you might be in a
hurry to put a shine to your
home - it's equally important
to put your car through some
'spring cleaning' of its own.
After battling months of
snow and icy roads, your car
is undoubtedly in desperate
need of some serious tender-
loving care. Follow this
Ahh, summer. Warm days,
drives in the countryside,
picnics on the beach. And
road construction. There you
are, stuck in traffic and it's a
sweltering 32°C.
Fortunately, with your air
conditioning on, it's a
comfortable 24°C inside the
car. For many people, air
conditioning is a "must have"
option.
Air conditioning works on
the principle that evaporating
fluid takes heat out of the air.
The refrigerant vapour is first
compressed to liquefy it, then
it evaporates. This chills and
dehumidifies the air coming
into the car.
The refrigerant that has
been used with great success
over the years has been Freon,
or R-12. However, R-12, as a
chlorofluorocarbon (CFC),
has been partly responsible
for depletion of the ozone
layer. In the last couple of
years. car manufacturers have
converted to R-134a, a
hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) that
is much less harmful to the
environment.
If you have an older car, it
may be possible to convert
your air conditioning to R-
134a. Ask your car service
provider about conversion
kits. If not, you should be
aware that R-12 •is no longer
being manufactured. While
spring checklist to ensure that
your car is tuned up and
spring-ready.
• Rimove your winter
tires / rotate all season
radials - If you have winter
tires, it's finally time to store
them. If you .don't have winter
tires, it's equally important to
have all season tires rotated.
Driving in the winter weather
can be hard on tires. Rotating
tires regularly extends their
life and will give you better
braking and handling. This is
especially important when
you're driving on wet roads
that are typical during spring.
• Wiper blades check -
stocks are available, their use
is tightly, controlled and a
great deal of care is taking to
prevent leaks and spills to
protect the ozone layer. A
number of provinces
completely prohibit the use of
R-12.
You should have your air
conditioning system checked
at least once a year to make
sure it has no leaks, that seals
and belts are in good shape,
and it's running efficiently.
As it cools, the air
conditioning system also take
moisture out of the air. The air
conditioning is usually
coupled with the windshield
defrost so that it will clear the
window more quickly.
There is always a concern
when you walk towards your
car and see a pool of
something underneath. In
summer, don't panic - your
air conditioner takes water out
of the air, and it drains onto
the ground. So if you have
been driving with the air
conditioning on, and then you
park, you will probably see
the water draining from the air
conditioner as you walk away
and a puddle under your car
when you return.
If the puddle doesn't look
like water, then it's okay to
panic.
Some people are concerned
about the fuel economy
Your wipers work hard all
winter wiping away dirt and
debris on your windshield. It
is a good idea to replace them
in the spring to be prepared
for April showers.
• Brake check - After the
cold winter be sure to check
your brakes. One of the
warning signs is brake noise,
including excessive grinding,
squealing, screeching or
chatter.
• Clean the underbody -
In addition to washing the
exterior, be sure to spray the
underbody and underneath the
rear and front bumpers to
rinse away any salt build-up
penalty of air conditioning.
It's true that when you use the
air conditioning at full blast in
city driving, you pay a price -
perhaps as much as a 15 to 20
per cent increase in your fuel
consumption.
When you look at it over
the course of a year's driving,
though, it's much less
significant. The annual fuel
consumption penalty is less
than five per cent, probably
more like two per cent. Most
people consider that a small
price to pay for being able to
chill out in the summer.
which can lead to erosion and
rusting. Use a high-pressure
sprayer or garden hose for
best results.
• Interior clean-up -
Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum!
Be sure to throw away any
unwanted garbage that has
hibernated under your seats
over the winter. And now is
the time to store your winter
car mats in the garage.
• Apply a protectant - Any
vinyl surface including the
dashboard, seats and the
steering wheel are susceptible
to cracking, sun damage and
fading - be sure to apply a
protectant at the beginning of
the season and touch-up
regularly.
• Change oil - If you've
been using, a thinner oil for
winter (i.e. 5W30) change
back to 10W30 for warmer
weather. But makt sure you
stick to the manufacturer's
recommended oil type for
your car!
• Check all fluids to make
sure they're topped up - In
the winter months, fluids are
easily depleted as your engine
works harder in the colder
weather Make sure to double-
check all the car's fluids
regularly.
• Wash your car - Just like
a good maintenance program
prolongs the life and
performance of your car, all
vehicleS regardless of the
finish (clear coat, acrylic,
enamel, etc.) require regular
washing throughout the year.
To preserve your car's shine
and protect the surface, wax
your vehicle once it has dried
completely.

Chill out with air
on hot summer days
Keep an eye on your car's vital fluids
(NC)-Your car is as reliable as the care it gets. A prudent motorist knows this and carefully
follows the directions in the owner's manual, making sure that a regular maintenance program
is carried out. You can increase your protection by taking a little time to see what's going on
under the hood.
1. Check the oil level every second time you fill the gas tank and keep an eye out for telltale
oil dribbles on your garage floor. (Your car can no more operate without oil than your body can
without blood, even for a few minutes.) To check the oil, remove the dip stick and wipe it off.
Replace it firmly then remove it again to see the oil level. Only add oil if the level has dropped
below the 'Add' mark. Don't fill beyond the 'Full' mark.
2. Change the oil and oil filters every 3 months or 5,000 km, whichever comes first. If you do
nothing else in the way of preventive maintenance do these oil and filter changes. They are the
single most effective things you can do for long engine life.
3. Check your transmission fluid, which is also done with a dip stick. Most cars require this be
done while the engine is running. If the normally pink fluid has turned a dirty brown or has a
burned smell, take the car to a mechanic right away.
4. Your brake fluid container is also under the hood. Fluid level drops slightly as brake pads
wear out. If the level drops noticeably in a short period of time, have your brakes checked.
5. Most important - check your coolant - BUT NEVER OPEN THE RADIATOR CAP OF A
CAR THAT HAS JUST BEEN RUNNING. Your coolant tank has two marks on its side - 'Full
Hot' and 'Full Cold'. If the level goes below 'Full Cold' after adding fluid, you probably have
a leak and should have it checked.
