THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 24, 2002. PAGE 15.
It had become a predictable
routine. I would make a half-
hearted attempt at conversation; Carl
(not his real name) vivuld ignore me.
Carl is a fun-loving, perceptive,
and often sociable friend of mine
who lives at L'Arche Stratford
(L'Arche is a Christian community
for people with developmental
handicaps and those who assist
them).
Carl cannot speak - but he does
communicate. Over the previous
four years, Carl and I had been
getting to know each other quite
well. At least once a week, I had
been helping Carl start the day with
a bath.
Carl is not a morning person;
neither am 1. Our morning together
often stretched the patience of both
of us.
Despite that. Carl would
sometimes greet me with an
enthusiastic smile when I woke him
up; most often, however, he would
just give me a look that said,
"You're not what I want to see first
thing in the morning."
As he got ready for his bath, I
Brussels Mennonite Fellowship
and St. John's Anglican Church in
Brussels have completed a 10-week
Alpha Course which is an
introduction to the Christian Faith. A
celebration meal was held at the
Anglican Church, Friday, April 19 as
a conclusion to the course, and as an
introduction to the next sessions of
the same material.
The course will run again
beginning this week. Pastor Brent
Kipfer and Rev. Tom Wilson have
opened their homes for these weekly
sessions. Anyone interested is
welcome to contact either of these
clergy.
Sunday, April 14, the congregation
at Brussels Mennonite held a baby
shower for baby Ty, son of Suvany
and Tom Provong, following the
regular church service, Christian
Education Hour and fellowship meal.
The church was filled to capacity
on Sunday, April 21. Elwin and Linda
Garland who were one of the
founding families of Brussels
Mennonite Fellowship in 1980, will
be moving to Didsbury, Alberta
where Elwin has accepted a call to
pastor a church there. A special
celebration was held for Linda, Elwin
and their children, Nathan, Andrew,
Rachel and Sarah.

would try to strike up a conversation
- nothing too brilliant, but an
attempt. CA- would ignore me.
Sometimes he might look up at the
ceiling, or maybe crank his head
away from me, or just make sounds
of displeasure.
I did not appreciate the snub. I lost
energy for talking. Instead, I let my
mind wander to other tasks of the
week: a sermon I needed to prepare,
a telephone call I wanted to make, or
a chore to tackle at home. I was with
Carl in body but not in spirit.
Sue Mosteller was the director of
L'Arche Stratford at the time. I told
her about the ru'. I was in with Carl.
When I described my frustration,
site responded by saying,
"Remember that when you bathe
Carl's body, you are bathing the
body of Jesus. As you stay present
with him, you are choosing to be
present with Jesus."
Really?
Maybe assisting Carl was not
such a mundane task after all.
At Easter, we remember that Jesus
has risen from the dead and that he
comes to meet us in a variety of
Elwin gave the message based on
the scripture, Exodus 1: 1-22. The
title of his message was The Joy of
Midwifery.
The youth group provided special
music and Rose Kuepfer presented
the children's story. Pastor Brent
Kipfer led the congregation in a
ways. In Matthew 25, Jesus
describes one of the ways we
encounter him: through meeting
those who are poor. Poverty takes a
variety of forms; in some way, we
are all poor. Jesus highlights the
significance of our encounters with
strangers, with people who are
hungry or sick or in prison.
"Truly, I tell you," Jesus says,
"just as you did it to one of the least
of these brothers or sisters of mine,
you did it for me."
When my conversation with Carl
again hit a brick wall, I would
sometimes think about the words of
Sue Mosteller - and of Jesus. Do
really want to serve Jesus half-
heartedly?
Can I really afford to let my mind
wander away from this person who
is in front of me?
Jesus wants to change the way we
see people; he comes in his risen
power to change our lives.
Remember that when you meet

an opportunity to encounter Jesus.

It was a busy night for the Brussels United Church youth
group on Saturday as they hosted a night of entertainment,
which included food, fun and an auction. (Vicky Bremner photo)
