Brussels Bulletts win silver

This year's Donald Higgins Memorial Award trophy for most
promising goalie was awarded to Brussels Midget'Bullett
Nicki Berfelz at the annual banquet on Sunday. Making the
presentation was Minor Hockey President Greg Ducharme.

The Brussels Midget Bulletts
travelled to Brampton Friday, April
12 for their opening game of the
provincial championship against
South Point.
Early in the second period South'
Point jumped into the lead when a
player sent in on a breakaway, beat
goalie Nicki Berfelz. South Point
notched their second goal with 3:59
to go in the second period, then
scored one more in the third to skate
away with a 3-0 victory.
The second game for the Bulletts
came the folloiving day against a
strong Kingston team. This was a
very physical matchup and_ both
teams had many scoring chances but
were stumped by Babcock in the
Kingston goal and Berfelz. In the
final 30 seconds Brussels' coach Jim
McDonald, pulled Berfelz in favour
of an extra attacker. The Bulletts
brought the puck into the Kingston
end, Rachel Elliott picked it up and
tired it out front, then Kerri Meier
tired a shot on net and Ashley Ritchie
scored in the rebound with three
seconds left.
This past week there were three
games of ball hockey played on
Thursday night.
Game one was the Maple Leafs
versus the Oilers. The Leafs won 13-
1. Scoring the lone goal for the
Oilers was Taylor Prior. Scoring for
the Leafs were Ty Sebastian with
four goals, Matt White with three
goals, Evan Wilkinson with one
goal, Chris Corbett with two goals,
Justin Pipe, Dallas Pennington and
Ryan Jutzi all with one. In net for the
Leafs was Kevin Pennington who
made many outstanding saves.
Game two was the Ducks versus
the Devils and the Ducks came out
on top with a 5-3 victory. Scoring for
the Ducks were Cody Subject with
two, Brian Burgess, Shean McLean
and Adam McClure each with one.
Scoring for the Devils were Evan
Ducharme with two goals and Scott
Phillips with one.
The Bulletts faced Flamborough in
their third and final game of round-
robin action, needing a victory to
secure top spot in their pool.
The Bulletts were firing on all
cylinders from start to finish in this
One. Michelle Cook picked up a pass
from Kristen Palmer, walked in on a
breakaway and fired a beauty to the
top corner glove side of the
Flamborough goalie. Jenn Hopf
gained the other assist.
Kerri Meier put the Bulletts up by
two collecting her own rebound and
slapping it in the Flamborough goal
assisted by Rebecca Bruton.
Cook got back into the action
scoring on a backhander, assisted by.
Ritchie and Palmer early in the third
period. Cook netted the hattrick with
an empty -net goal with'40 seconds
left in the game, to give the Bulletts a
convincing 4-0 victory and put them
first in their pool.
The semi-final matchup would pit
the Bulletts against Cambridge. Cook
scored on a wrap-around with 47
seconds left in the first, assisted by
Ritchie and Elliott. Berfelz took over
Game three found the Redwings
versus the Senators with the Wings
winning 4-2. Scoring for the Wings
were Andrew McDonald and Mitch
Blake each with one and Jason
Bowman with two. Scoring for the
from them shutting the door bn the
Cambridge team with many splendid
saves which earned her a 1-0 shutout.
This moved the Bulletts to the gold
medal matchup and a second game
with Kingston.
Kingston was first to score beating
Berfelz with a great wrist shot in the
second period. The Bulletts not to be
outdone answered with one of their
own. Cook passed the puck to Ritchie
who deked her way by the Kingston
netminder. Elliott gained the other
assist.
Kingston answered that one,
scoring early in the third on another
nice wrist shot to restore their lead.
The Bulletts battled back when
Elliott scored on a scramble in front
of the Kingston net, assisted by Cook
and Ritchie.
With overtime looming Kingston
caught a break, picking up a loose
puck. and scoring.
Once again the Bulletts pulled their
goalie to in an effort to tie the the
game, but in spite of pressure and a
number of close shots, the Bulletts
lost 3-2.
Senators were Gavin Bowers and
Adam Corbett each with a single.
Although most games were fairly
even the Leafs and the Oilers will
see some trades done before next
week.
