Volunteers area's heart and soul
April 22 - 28 is volunteer week in
Canada and Blyth's Heart and Soul
campaign demonstrates what can be
accomplished when volunteers set
their minds to a problem. Volunteers
are putting their backs and wallets
into revitalizing an important
community resource.
When local citizens decided it was
time to rebuild and refurbish their
arena they made plain their intention
to be full partners with the various
levels of government necessary to
complete the project.
Volunteers worked to help prepare
the grant applications. Volunteers put
on hard hats and safety boots to tear
out the interior of the old building.
Volunteers are currently working
The Stratford/Perth Branch of the
Canadian Red Cross is expanding to
provide Canadian Red Cross
programming in Huron County.
The Branch will now be known as
the Stratford/Huron-Perth Branch.
The office is located at 100 Gordon
St. in Stratford.
Immediate programming will
include Disaster Services. The
Canadian Red Cross recruits and
hard to raise the funds pledge as the
community portion of the total
cost.
Banding together to solve a
community problem is not a new
idea in local communities. The
reaction to a provincial closure order
against the Brussels arena is a case in
point.
The previous Brussels arena was
forced to close in 1976 because of
changes in the provincial building
code. Local citizens banded together
to produce a new community
centre without resorting to tax
increases.
In •1977 the BMG Community
Centre was officially opened - the
result Of donated land, labour and
trains volunteers to respond to
community disasters in co-operation
with other agencies and the
municipalities as required. Those
interested in volunteering should
call the Branch.
The Branch will also offer
International Services to residents of
Huron County including
programming to build community
awareness of situations throughout
fundraising.
The Belgrave arena is also the
result of community action.
Beginning with an outdoor rink built
with donated materials and labour it
was enclosed at its present location
in 1949.
It has been renovated several times
since then and still receives a large
portion of its budget from the annual
fowl supper put on by volunteers.
Arenas and community centres are
just one aspect of volunteerism.
Activities ranging from church
suppers to driving the elderly to
appointments are all made possible
by volunteers.
In Huron volunteers make the
community.
the world and a means by which
anyone can provide assistance.
First Aid courses will be offered
throughout .the County of Huron.
The Canadian Red Cross is a leader
in safety training and will offer
Standard First Aid, Emergency First
Aid, CPR and Babysitting courses.
Interested individuals and business
clients should call the Branch for
details .
