New house and new business
Gerrie and John Bos sit in the dining room of their newly
completed Bed and Breakfast home called Trailside
because of its location near the Blyth Greenway Trail. When
they designed their retirement home they incorporated the
idea of turning it into a B&B from the very beginning. (Dayia

New home means new business for local couple
By David Blaney

Trailside Bed and Breakfast of
Blyth is ready to open •its doors to
Festival patrons and others
vacationing in the area. The new
business, located on Drummond
Street belongs to Gerrie and
JohnBos.
Although the couple had retired
from full-time farming, they
continued to live in a second
residence on the property until last
year. When their son considered
selling the farm they decided to
move into Blyth.
The couple decided they wanted
a home built to their specifications.
At this point the bed and breakfast
idea came to the fore.
When they decided to build the
new house they also made the
decision to design it with their
business idea in mind. Mrs. Bos
said, "The idea had been in the back
of my head do this for a while."
After finding the property
overlooking the Greenway Trail
they began the complicated process
of choosing a builder and getting

Larry Langan, the coordinator of
the University of Western Ontario's
Principal Qualification Program
and a long-time Catholic school
board employee serving the
London area, has been hired to take
over as the director of education for
the Huron-Perth Catholic District
School Board.
Huron-Perth trustees
unanimously supported the
recommendation to hire Langan at
a regular meeting Monday, March
25.
Langan was selected following
interviews by trustees of two
candidates for the position, and will
now replace retiring administrator
Gaetan Blanchette effective Jan. 1,
2003.
"I think we have someone here
who brings a lot of experience and
knowledge to the position," said
trustee Bernard Murray. "He has
come to us with an abundance of
the necessary permits.
Unlike the new home •horror
stories that sometimes surface, the
couple has nothing but praise for all
involved. They say their experience
with their contractor was very good
and that the municipality was
"nothing but helpful."
The home itself is designed with
the guest bedrooms on the second
floor with a bath in between. Two
bright and airy rooms feature quilts
handmade by Mrs. Bos.
The downstairs is an open plan
with a walkout to a patio for
summer breakfasts. The owners'
bedroom and private bath is also on
enthusiasm and that's good to
see."
Murray added that the decision to
hire Langan made it much easier
for trustees to accept the fact the
board will lose Blanchette next
year.
A media release issued at the
meeting details the wealth of
experience which will be brought to
the board by Langan, who is
married with two ' children and
already maintains a home in
Bayfield.
"Mr. Langan is currently a
superintendent of education for the
London District Catholic School
Board," the release states. "(He)
has been a teacher, consultant, vice
principal and a principal for the
board, and its predecessor."
He is praised particularly for his
"leadership in both Special
Education and Professional
Development," for which the
release says Langan is "respected
provincially."
"He has earned a reputation as a
this level.
With the snow finally gone the
couple is looking forward to getting
started on the landscaping. The
large yard will have raised
tlowerbeds at the front with a
curved flagstone path to the porch.
The rear yard will have trees and
more flowers.
A special feature of the business
will be the sale of locally made
crafts. The current content of the
craft cupboard indicate)s Mrs. Bos's
skill with a needle and she is getting
others to contribute. The proceeds
from the sales will be used to aid
local community activities,
leader who gets things done."
Blanchette, like others in the
Huron-Perth board, is familiar with
Langan's work and commitment
due to the fact he comes from a
neighbouring board. And the
outgoing director of education says
knowing he'll now be replaced by
Langan has made the decision to
retire much easier..
"I feel good about it now,
whereas before I was concerned,"
Blanchette said.
According to the release, Langan
is looking forward to his new role.
"I feel honoured to have been
invited to join a team of Catholic
educators and a school system with
a long-standing reputation for
excellence," he says in the media
release. "I have tremendous respect
for the people of Huron-Perth and
for those with whom I will be
working.
"I hope to build on the successes
of this board and look forward to
facing new challenges with the
team that is already in place."
