Rates for licenses and permits, daycare rates and a liquor license for the Seaforth arena all came up for discussion. At one point during the evening Councillor William Teall seemed to express the general frustration over the confusing nature of the budget discussions. "It's like reading cards at times - what you put in revenue and put in expenses." In the end it was suggested that councillors take a week to digest the cards they had been given. Time was set aside during the first part of the next meeting for another attempt at hitting the jackpot. By Bonnie Gropp Citizen editor They may be a boon to soybean growers, but for homeowners the influx of ladybugs has become somewhat of a nuisance. While much has been said of-the fact that the lady beetles we're seeing now are not 'real' ladybugs, according to University of Guelph Professor of environmental biology Steve Marshall there 500 species in North American which are members of the oneTamily. "The ones we are seeing now, the multi-coloured Asian lady beetle were deliberately introduced into the United States for the control of aphids in 1991," said Marshall. However, there was no permit ever granted for their release into Canada. Through one • way or another however, the Asian lady beetle found its way here with the first being recorded in 1994. Marshall predicted accurately it would seem, that the number of beetles would soon be abundant. 'Last year there was an enormous population explosion," said Marshall, a fact that has raised some concerns. "Any time you introduce exotic predators without considering the impact on native species there is a concern." Marshall talks of upsetting bio-diversity and notes that the spotted lady beetle, which is native to Ontario, has been eliminated. Other species are now rare. What has prompted the growth in population is quite likely the reason the lady beetles found their way here. Information from the Ministry of Natural Resources states that the population groWs:iri response to an increase in their pre ;. Lady beetles are the most beneficial of all insects because they prey upon insects that damage crops and trees. The preferred food is aphids and scale insects, of -which there have been outbreaks recently. .affecting soybeans and fruit trees. The Asian soybean aphids caught area farmers off guard with their Arrival in Ontario during the last growing season They are the only species to colonize soybeans, reproducin quickly to create massive populations, which feed on plant juices. This feeding activity deprives the plant of nutrients. But that is only one way in which the aphids harm the soybeans. A flow of plant fluids onto the leaf supports mold growth which interferes with photosynthesis. Also the insects carry a soybean virus and current inseticide treatment's have not been a 'practical solution. The lady beetles, while their impact is still in the evaluation stage, offer biological control of the ' aphids. 'I would imagine that for anyone growing anything that suffers from aphid damage, the lady beetles are welcome. Now that spring is here, however, homeowners are being invaded .by the beetles which are awakening from hibernation. Marshall said the beetles though generally harmless will nip, under "unusual circumstances." "The lady beetle density is so high they are everywhere, not only chewing on an unknown quantity and diveristy of insects but also, and abnormally, nipping at the people they land on." Also, if squashed the blood causes discolouring. Vacuuming is the best way to get rid of them, Marshall said, "though 1 can't imagine why you would want to." An altnerative, he suggests is to find the way they are getting in and block it. Lady beetles may help soybean growers •
