The Belgrave area has joined the
growing list of communities with a
Canadian Foodgrains Bank project.
The Belgrave project will grow 25
acres-of corn • for donation to the
Foodgrains Bank.
The Canadian Foodgrains Bank is
a Christian-based food aid and
development organization that
collects donations of grain, cash, and
other agricultural commodities for
distribution to the world's hungry. It
is owned by 13 Canadian national
churches who work with
international partners to ensure food
gets to places in need.
Last year, the Canadian
Foodgrains Bank sent 40,000 tonnes
of food to over 20 countries, one of
which was Afghanistan.
According to George Procter,
chairman of the local project, the
initial plan was to grow 10 acres of
corn, but support has been so great
they have more than doubled their
original plans.
The project began after a
Foodgrains representative spoke at
Knox United Church in Belgrave.
During the winter, the church
formed a committee and, as
recommended by the Foodgrains
Bank, they began a search for a city
