Latin dancers take top spot at national competition
Winners
Jayne and Mark Marquis captured the ball-
room dancing championship recently at the competition
held in Calgary. The pair will take part in the international
event in Italy this October. (Photo submitted)
It was Jayne who first convinced
Mark to take a dance class.
"Actually I made a deal with him.
He wanted me to learn to fly so I said
I would if he would take ballroom
dancing with me."
Though she followed through on
her part of the bargain, it is clearly
her suggestion that has caught on for
the pair. So much so that while her
husband may have approached the
activity with some reluctance, his
interest now is equal to that of his
spouse.

"Something pretty cool happened
when we came back from the World
competition last year," said Jayne,
explaining that the dancers'-second-
place finish at Nationals that yehr
had earned them a spot at the inter-
national contest. "Mark realized how
good some of those dancers were
and I suggested that he should take
ballet, to see how the body works, to
get in tune with it."
He followed her advice and now
takes weekly ballet lessons.
As a couple, the Marquises take
ballroom dancing lessons out of
Toronto. Besides having coaches in
Montreal and Toronto they have as
well studied with a coach from
England this past year. About 15
hours a week is spent perfecting
their talent.
At the Calgary competition the
Marquises first competed in the
modern dance, which includes the
waltz, tango, Viennese waltz, foxtrot
and quick step. After the quarter
final the seven judges decide who to
recall and the number of competitors
drops from 21 to 12. Another round
of dances, then the final has six cou-
ples.
After completing the dances a
third time, the couples are marked on
each.
"So you do five dances three
times. It's quite exhausting and then
you realize you have to come back
that night for the Latin competition."
Finishing third in modern, the
Marquises knew their strength was
in the more youth-oriented Latin, but
they must beat the reigning champs.
They had defeated them at the inter-
national contest, however, Marquis
noted, "It's always difficult to beat a
couple that's won two years in a row.
We just worked hard and it really
paid off."
The five dances in the Latin com-
petition are the cha-cha, samba,
rhumba, pasodoble and jive. These
are done for one and a half minutes
each, then the competitors are

marked on each. The Marquises took
top marks in all five.
Of the accomplishment, Marquis
said, "I didn't sleep on Saturday. It
was so exciting. To achieve this,
your names are in the book forever."
The victory will take them to the
World competition in Italy' in
October. "We have until then to try
to do a little bit better than last year.
The couple will also compete in an
open competition in Blackpool, Eng.
this May.
While a top ranking means
dancers could make the switch from
amateur to professional, and start
making money, Marquis admits she
and her husband aren't ready to take
that step. "To turn pro you start at the
bottom again. And for now we want
to give the Worlds another shot. But
I would like to teach someday," she
says.
For now, however, they like things
