Hitmen win B gold
The Seaforth Hitmen Juvenile
Boys Broomball Team returned from
the National Junior Championships
with the 'B' division gold medal.
The Junior Nationals were held in
Oak Bluff, Manitoba from March 27
- 30. The HitMen were the
defending Nationals Champions
from 2001 and had their hopes set
high on repeating as champions.
Before starting the tournament the
team knew that their first game
would set the tone and ultimately
their placement in the tournament.
Unfortunately they lost the first
game Wednesday morning, 4-3 in
double overtime in their rival from
Ontario the Embrun Ice Dogs.
Goalscorers for the Hitmen were
Trevor Ward, two and Jeff Metzger.
Ward was the team's MVP.
That afternoon saw the team take
on the Saskatchewan Axemen. This
was a must-win game to have a
chance to advance to the A Division
playoffs. The outcome was not
favourable with Saskatchewan
winning 5-2.
Scorers were Ward and Metzger.
Scott McNaughton was the team's
MVP. The Axemen were the
eventual national champions.
With pride on the line the Hitmen
took on the Alberta Stingers
Thursday morning and posted their
first win 2-1. Scoring goals were
Aaron Bakker and Howard Hughes.
The team's MVP was Aaron
Whitney.
With a win under their belt,
Thursday afternoon saw the Hitmen
play the Manitoba Hosts. An easy 4-
0 victory was had. Hughes, Ward,
and Ryan Greig • were the
goalscorers. Once again Ward was
the MVP.
The Hitmen's final round robin
game was Friday morning against
the Quebec College Stanislas. The
team was on a roll, winning 3-2 in
double overtime. Scoring goals were
Ward, Greig and Dave Squibb. Once
again Ward was MVP.
The team finished the round robin
with a 3-2 record, finishing fourth in
their pool and advancing to the B
playoff round. Friday afternoon, the
Hitmen went on to defeat the
Manitoba Provincials 4-2. Netting
the goals were Jason Pennington
with two, McNaughton and Hughes
with singles. Ward repeated as MVP.
This win put the team into the B
Championship, ironically against the
IceDogs, who had defeated them in
their first game. This game had a
different outcome with the Hitmen
defeating the Ice Dogs 4-0 and
claiming the B. title. Finishing the
tournament with goals were Ward,
Whitney, McNaughton and Squibb.
Ward was once again the team's
MVP and was selected to the 1st
Team All-Stars for the
championships.
Team members were Jon deWeerd,
Murray Kuhl, Scott Dale, Jeremy
Phelan, Adam Koehler, Trevor Ward,
Dave Squibb, Jason Pennington,
Ken Hughes, Scott McNaughton,
Steve Squibb, Jason Veenstra,
Howard Hughes, Gerard O'Reilly,
Aaron Bakker, Peter Bos, Anthony
deBoer, Jeff Metzger, Ryan Greig,
Aaron Whitney and coaches Robert
Hunking, Scott Leonhardt and Matt
Shortreed.
The liftmen acknowledge the
support from the Seaforth Broom-
ball League, the surrounding
communities, parents and spon-
sors.
