As well as perennial favourites such as Lucky Old Sun and Peace in the Valley, the new CD speaks to the world after Sept. 11 with Take Comfort and When We Overcome. Many of the songs on her new release have a gospel feel. However, "it's not about religion" MacNeil notes, "it's about the common dream Tickets for the 2002 Blyth Festival season go on sale Tuesday April 2 at 10 a.m. Patrons can purchase tickets in person at the box, office or phone 519-523-9.300 or toll-free 1-877- 862-5984. MacNeil first came to prominence in Canada during 'Expo 86' in Vancouver. That sudden recognition doesn't dim her struggles through the 1960s and 70s when she support- ed two young children as a single parent in Toronto. After leaving Big Pond, Cape Breton at [7, she combined singing in coffeehouseF and at folk festivals with washing dishes and cleaning houses to support her dream. Her independently .released, 1987 album, Flying on You Own, led to a recording contract with Virgin Records(Canada). By the 1990s MacNeil was touring internationally, performing in places such as the. Royal Albert Hall in London and the Sydney Opera House in Australia. MacNeil says that she prefers to leave the studio and perform in front of a live audience. "It (the studio) is fun and serves a purpose, but the Goodbye, Piccadilly by Douglas Bowie. filthy Rich, a criminally funny classic comedy opens one week later on July 10th. Later, the Blyth Festival opens the second half of the season on July 31 with the highly anticipated premiere of Barnboozled: He Won't Come in From the Barn, Part II, by Ted Johns, followed by the worldwide hit The Drawer Boy by Michael Healey opening on Aug. 7. Despite this she admits that if she was left with the choice of perform- ing or songwriting it would be no contest. For her, songwriting is "an expression of what I feel and what I love to do." She says simply, "It has brought me great pleasure." MacNeil is from Cape Breton where Canada's Celtic heritage has been celebrated in music for many years. She is quick to admit this her- itage is part of what she is, but she says her music is about more than that. Her Mining the Soul tour with the Men of the Deeps, Miners choir is perhaps an accurate reflection of where her music originates. She talks about the miners "high place in the industry" and their "remarkable stories". It is obvious that she feels a kin- ship with ordinary people going about the business of living. This is June 6. The, vouchers offer four weekday tickets for $70 and four weekend tickets for only $90. MacNeil returned to the home she had left in 1978 and says, "My con- nection to other island musicians helped bring everything into focus." However, her inspiration comes from within, she says, "It's an inner drive, like a fire that had to go its own way." When this tour is over MacNeil will be taking a break but will be returning to the road in November and December. At that time she will repeat her very successful Mining the Soul tour. MacNeil's Blyth appearance has proved so popular that a second show has been scheduled.
