Brussels Livestock report
Cows sell on steady trade at Tuesday sale
Total receipts for the Brussels
Livestock for the week ending March
22 were 2,355 head of cattle, 1824
lambs and goats.
On Tuesday fed steers and heifers
sold at prices $1 lower. The cows sold
on a steady trade. On Thursday the
veal sold $2 to $3 lower. The lambs
sold under pressure. On Friday the
calves sold on a steady market while
the yearlings sold $1 to $2 lower.
There were 506 steers on offer
selling from $110 to $118 with sales
to $136. Luke Gingerich, Chesley,
consigned one limousin steer
weighing 1,370 lbs. which sold to
Dominion Meats for $130. His
overall offering of 15 steers averaged
1,466 lbs. for an average of $116.77.
One limousin steer consigned by
Perry Sereda, Centralia, weighed
1,330 lbs. selling to Norwich Packers
for $129.25. His overall offering of
40 steers averaged 1,411 lbs. selling
for an average of $119.68.
Jerry P.' Cronin, Dublin, consigned
one blonde steer Weighing 1,360 lbs.
which sold for $127 and one red steer
weighing 1,400 lbs. which sold to
Norval Meat Packers for $118.25. Six

average of $116.12 with one limousin
steer weighing 1,415 lbs. selling to
Holly Park Meat Packers for $128.
Bill Klages, Desboro, consigned
one limousin steer weighing 1,330
lbs. selling to Dominion Meats for
$118.50. His overall consignment of
37 steers averaged 1,260 lbs. selling
for an average of $112.98. Twenty
steers consigned by Howard Martin,
Brussels, averaged 1,492 lbs. selling
for an average of $112.86 with his top
limousin steer weighing 1,360 lbs.
The Ontario Agricultural College
recognized George Underwood from
Wingham by presenting him with the
2002 OAC Outstanding Service
Award at a banquet on April 1. .
George and Helen Underwood and
family have made contributions to
agricultural programs by
volunteering over many years at the
regional and provincial leyel as well
as in the local community.

B.Sc(Agr), for a period of over 12
years, shared their entrepreneurial
and innovative business and
agricultural experiences with
University of Guelph students
through lectures, farm tours and
discussion groups. •
Diploma and degree students have
benefitted from exposure to their
influence in farm business
management, agricultural
technology and rural community
issues.
Underwood served actively on the
advisory board of the Rural
Development Outreach Project
operated by the University of
Guelph in Huron County to help the

averaged 1,237 lbs. for an average of
$120.89.

Rathwell, Brucefield, consigned two
limousin heifers-averaging 1,313 lbs.

$120.25. His overall offering of six
heifers averaged 1,306 lbs. selling for
an average of $116.25. Three heifers
consigned by Willard Siegner,
Mildmay, averaged 1,370 lbs. selling
for an average of $116.06 with one
limousin heifer weighing 1,285 lbs.

heifers averaging 1,254 lbs. selling
for an average of $115.52 with sales

He assisted in the transfer of
extensive and valuable archival
collection from the Ontario Rural
Heritage Experience (Ontario
Agricultural Museum) at Milton into
the library of the University of
Guelph. The vast collection of
historic documents now provides
Ontario Agricultural _College and
other researchers with an accessible,
unequalled resource concerning the
agriculture industry, farm and rural
communities of the province.
Underwood has been active in
farm safety and served as president
of the Ontario Farm Safety
organization. He is a prime mover
on' the Wingham and District
Hospital board. -
He has served on commodity
marketing boards and the board of
the Ontario Rural Heritage
Experience.
He and his family have supported
the University of Guelph through
extension programs, recruitment of
students and the Amber Underwood
scholarship funding. All are well
respected for their active and
ongoing contributions to many rural

an average of $78.19.

consigned four holstein cows
averaging 1,273 lbs. selling for an
average of $70 with one holstein cow

One blonde cow consigned by Brian
McClure, Seaforth, weighed 1,555
lbs. which sold to Aylmer Meat
Packers for $75.50.
There were 15 bulls on offer selling
from $70 to $88 with sales to $89.50.
One limousin bull consigned by
Adely Vanbenthem, Hagersville,
weighed 1,675 lbs. selling to
Dominion Meats for $89.50. Don-A-
Dale Farms, Alvinston, consigned
one simmental bull weighing 2,480
lbs. selling to Aylmer Meat Packers
for $84.50.
There were 145 veal on offer. Beef
sold $100 to $113.50; Holstein, $80
to $98; Plain Holstein, $65 to. $80.

hereford veal heifer weighing 575
lbs. which sold to Holly Park Meat
Packers for $113.50. His overall
consignment of five veal averaged
666 lbs. for an average price of
$97.58. Christhill Farms, Tara,
consigned one BWF veal steer
weighing 630 lbs. which sold for
$106. One red veal steer consigned
by Henry Wilts, Auburn, weighed
730 lbs. and sold for $100.
Lambs, under 50 lbs., sold $173 to
$230; 50 - 64 lbs., $162.50 to $206;
65 '- 79 lbs., $150 to $180; 80 - 94
lbs., $147 to $159; 95 - 109 lbs.,
organizations and community
projects.
The Underwoods operate beet,
`broiler chicken and cash crop farm
enterprises as well as a grain
elevator and soybean processing
plant in Turnberry Twp.
Underwood was, presented with a
framed citation and a coffee table
book as a memento by OAC Dean
Craig Pearson. His name will be
engraved on a plaque displayed in
the Ontario Agricultural College
administration area at the University
of Guelph, which administers the
program.
The OAC Outstanding Service
Award was established to recognize
individuals outside of government
and university employment who
have provided outstanding service to
any one or more of the research,
teaching and service programs of the
Ontario Agricultural College.
Nominations are made by any
faculty member, department or
school of OAC.
The recipient will have given
outstanding personal service without
remuneration over a period of at
least 10 years.

On Saturday, Feb. 23 at 10:30 a.m.
in the Cargill Fertilizer Plant the
Huron County Chinchilla 4-H held
its third meeting.
President Nicole Moore opened
the meeting with the 4-H pledge and
accepted the secretarial minutes of
the last meeting as read.
The members then discussed with
their leaders, Barb and Ray Storey,
any behaviour problems they were
experiencing with their chinchillas.
The 4-Hers then took up the answers
of the questions from meeting

Next the text from meeting three
was read and discussed. Future dates
were discussed such as the due dates
for the 4-Hers books and
achievement day.
The 4-Hers then planned the next
meeting which would be a claiming
show for the Georgian Bay and a
neighbouring Chinchilla club which
the 4-H members would observe.
The 4-Hers were given a
crossword and a word search to
complete by the next meeting.
