Win ghant Advance-Times
One of the greatest series in the
history of Alliance Hockey has
finished with the Huron Perth Lakers
as Bantam AAA champions in a
hard-fought 3-2 win over the Elgin
Middlesex Chiefs.
The stage was set. Game seven in
a back-and-forth series in which the
Lakers and the Chiefs decided would
go the distance. The action was so
intense that it kept every fan at the
edge of their seat until the final
buzzer.
In front of a large crowd at the
London Ice House, Elgin skated out
to a 1-0 lead, with a first period
power play. Amidst the big hits,
great passes and various scoring
opportunities, the crowd awed at
each moment of the game.
The Lakers answered ,the Chiefs'
first tally of the game with three of
their own to take a 3-1 lead into the
final minutes of the third period.
The action was frantic. The Chiefs
scored a nice goal late in the third,
but the Lakers' resilience and
determination sealed the win for
Iluron-Perth.
Bantam AAA Lakers head coach
Scott Pettigrew said both teams
made their home organizations and
the Alliance proud. Huron Perth
showed the graciousness of a true
champion and Elgin Middlesex
exemplified great sportsmanship
throughout the series.
"Our kids had a dream at the start
of the season of going to the OHL
Cup and with a lot of bard work and
dedication it has now become a
reality," he said. "It sounds a little
cliché, but it truly was a team effort."
The on-ice display was truly what
minor hockey is all about. Players
from both teams congratulated each
other on numerous occasions as
well; both teams received standing
ovations from the crowd during the
trophy presentations.
"I want to congratulate our Major
Bantams, players, staff and parents
on behalf of our organization for a
great season and exciting finale,"
said Huron Perth AAA Lakers
president Rob Jeffrey. "I would also
like to congratulate Elgin Middlesex
on a fantastic series. We are proud of
our team's accomplishment and
know they will be a strong and proud
representative of the Alliance at the
OHL Bantam Cup.
Tom Pettigrew of Wingham and
Justin Peters of Blyth are members
of the team. Mike Henry of Blyth is
the assistant coach.
The OHL Bantam Cup is being
held this week (March 25-30) in
Brantford. The Lakers will be joined
by top AAA Bantam teams from the
Ottawa District, Hockey
Northwestern Ontario, Greater
Toronto Hockey League, Northern
Ontario Hockey Association and the
Ontario Minor Hockey Association.
The host Brantford 99ers will also
represent Alliance Hockey at the
2002 OHL Bantam Cup.
