Brussels PeeWees lead OMHA series final
The Brussels PeeWee Rep
team played the first two
games of OMHA finals this
weekend against Deseronto.
Game one was played on
Saturday afternoon and
Brussels came out a little
sluggish allowing Deseronto
two quick goals in the first
period. Matt White managed
to get Brussels on the board
before the end of the first on a
nice pass from Matt
McClinchey.
The second period
belonged to Brussels with
goals scored by McClinchey,
Greg Bowers and Adam
Corbett with the assists going
to Bowers, Jordan Campbell
The Brussels Novice Bulls
hockey team •is playing
exciting hockey as they
approach the end of their
season.
During winter break they
participated in a close,
entertaining series with
Howick. Throughout the first
game in Howick, Brussels had
a clear edge in play but was
unable to put the puck past a
hot Howick goaltender.
Brussels pulled the goalie at
the end of the game and had
several good scoring chances,
but ended up losing by a 1-0
score.
On their home ice for the
second game, Brussels evened
the series with a 3-1 win in
another fast, close game.
The deciding game, played
in Howick, was a carbon copy
of the first two with end-to-
end action and numerous
chances for both teams.
Brussels won the game 3-2,
thus winning the series and
now goes on to face Ripley in
the next series.
Also during winter break
the Novice team participated
in a tournament in Bayfield.
In their first game Brussels
surprised the host squad,
defeating Bayfield 3-2 in a
very close contest.
They next met Elma-Logan,
winning by a 5-4 score. Their
and McClinchey.
Deseronto was first to find
the net in the third period but
McClinchey answered on a
pass from White. The final
goal belonged to Brussels
when Christopher Jutzi made
a great pass up tc Chris
Corbett who put it in the
empty net.
Game two was played on
Sunday and it was a nail-biter.
With no scoring in the first
the Brussels fans were
thinking 'not again'. But the
second period was a busy
time in both nets. Deseronto
scored first but Brussels
scored two fast goals by
Chase Chapman and Andrew
two wins placed Brussels in
the A final, once again against
Bayfield who were bent on
avenging their loss from
earlier in the day.
Again the Brussels team
treated their fans to an
exciting game, falling behind
by a few goals, then mounting
a determined come-back.
Unfortunately they weren't
.„,able to catch Bayfield and
ended on the losing side of the
7-4 score.
The coaches and parents
were unable to single out any
individual players for mention
in these six games as all
players played exceptionally
well. The novices are showing
improved skills, a good work
ethic and, most importantly,
are having fun, said coaches.
Atom team
going strong
The Brussels Atom team is
still going strong. The Bulls
have made it to the playoffs
and, last Wednesday were
hosted by Hanover in the first
of three possible games.
The next game is in
Brussels Monday, March 25
at 6:30 p.m. and if they are
able to tie it up, the third
game will be in Hanover on
Wednesday, March 27 at 6:30
p.m.
McDonald with the assists
going to White, McClinchey,
and Chapman. Deseronto
scored with 51 seconds left to
tie it up but Brussels was not
finished. McClinchey found
the net with 31 seconds left on
a great pass from Bowers and
C. Corbett.
The third period was just as
close with Deseronto scoring
two goals to go ahead of
Brussels but not for long.
McClinchey once again
scored on a pass from Steven
Ropp. This sent the game into
overtime, but the Brussels
boys came out determined to
win with the Corbett boys
working together. Adam
passed it up to Chris who put
it into the net. The teams meet
in Brussels Good Friday at 7
p.m.
See? Right there
It was fun and games on Saturday night when
the Blyth ABC Double D Gals took on the 1972
All-Ontario PeeWee champs in a fundraiser for
the Midgets. These two players appear to be
getting a closer look at the situation. (Vicky Bremner
