Rev. John Roberts was the guest
minister at Londesboro United
Church on Sunday, March 17.
Greeting churchgoers were Mike
and Shannon Clark and family. Rick
a.id Brenda Konarski received the
offering. Playing the organ that
morning was Gail Lear.
During the children's time Rev.
Roberts showed the boys and girls
two drawings. One picture was of a
duck or a rabbit; the other was of a
young or old lady depending on
one's perspective. He cautioned the
young people about judging circum-
stances or people too quickly. Time
and care is needed to see things as
they really are.
The theme for the service was the
story of Jonah, the facts of which
You have received in the mail in
the last week a large white envelop.
Those of us who are residents of the
Municipality of Central Huron may
easily have disregarded the envelope
as the return address is Twp. of
North Huron. That is unless one rec-
ognized the slogan Heart and Soul in
the top left corner.

WI disbands
Eight members were present at-the
Londesboro Women's Institute meet-
ing on Monday, March 11. Those
members voted unanimously to dis-
band the group.
They agreed to donate monies in
their account to the following causes
— Pennies for Friendship, Huron
County 4-H, Summer Team Ontario
Street United Church, Londesboro
Lions Club, Londesboro United
Church Organ Fund and the
Children's Hospital of Western
Ontario. Two gifts for this year's
graduates at Hullett Central School
- will be purchased as well. Money
left after a complimentary dinner for
members and friends will be given to
the Erland Lee Museum.

burse their money was in keeping

zero on March II for a memorial
service on the six month anniversary
of an event that reverberated around
the world. Throughout history the
attack on the World Trade Centre
will be known as 9/11.,
Coincidentally on March 1,I, The
Toronto Sun's cover story headline
was Canucks Head to Combat. The
article states, "practice is over; it's
time to get on with the real thing".
The accompanying front page pic-
ture is of Canadian soldierS"boarding
a Hercules aircraft.
One of those light infantrymen pic-
tured is Master Corporal Allen Hillis,
son of Bob and Annemarie Hillis of
Londesboro. A member of the
Second BattaliOn of the Princess
Patricia Division out of Winnipeg,
Allen was deployed on March 2.
This group of Canadian soldiers
had been on standdown alert for two
months. When the orders came, they
were on their way within a week.
The troops flew to Germany on
INeie given during the scripture les-
sor ,. Four lessons or facts were
identified during the message.
Firstly, Rev. Roberts pointed out
the persistence of God's call. Jonah
could not escape God's mission for
him either by fleeing or being swal-
lowed by a whale. Likewise
Christians are constantly reminded
of their lives with/in God.
Fact number two was Jonah's
aloofness or determination not to get
involved with God's mission for
him. Likewise, God wants
Christians to get involved with life.
Jonah was angry when the people
of Nineveh did not get what he
thought they deserved because of
their wickedness. Christians, too,
need to remind themselves in similar
Centre. All residents in that catch-
ment area were sent an appeal. This
is a most ambitious project undertak-
en to make major improvements to
the existing building.
Find your copy of the information,
read it and give it your considera-
tion. I admit to have been taken
aback by the suggestion each house-
hold should give $1,000 until I read
further and realized other amounts
were also acceptable.
Situated as we are between Clinton
and Blyth, Londesboro families have
made use of the existing facility over
the years. As a couple we are not reg-
ular attenders of events there.
However, in the past our family
spent many hours each week there
for minor sports. I would be disap-
civilian aircraft and boarded
American troop transports for
Afghanistan. They are to assist U.S._
forces in the battle zone in the east.-
ern mountains where the Taliban and
al-Qaida holdouts are hiding in
caves.
There are now 1,000 Canadian
troops on the ground in Afghanistan.
This is the first combat for Canadian
troops since the Korean War. They
are engaged in what is being called
Operation Harpoon.
His family have. concerns for
Allen's safety, naturally. But Allen
has assured his father that these men
are well trained for this type of fight-
ing having also done exercises
alongside the crack airborne division, in the United States.
His worried parents wish he was
on a humanitarian aid mission as he
had been in Bosnia. Allen's current
tour of duty in Afghanistan is
rumoured to be for six months: Then
he may be reassigned to Bosnia.
circumstances that God is gracious
and forgiving. This was lesson three.
Lastly is the whole question of
faith which is fundamental to life.
All of us express or live our faith in
different ways. We need to open our
hearts and minds to people of all
faiths and extend love uncondition-
ally. Endemic to faith is the knowl-
edge that one can come to God as
they are; there are no conditions or
rejections.
Next Sunday being Palm Sunday
the Londesboro congregation will
celebrate the Sacrament of Holy
Communion.
The Sunday School is asking con-
gregants to bring spring flowers to
church on Easter Sunday to decorate
the sanctuary for the service.
pointed if future young people and
families did not have the same
opportunity.
Give the appeal some thought, ask
questions and be prepared when a
volunteer contacts you regarding
your help.
Pupils returned to classes at
Hullett Central this week for the last
term of the school year. Justice is the
virtue being emphasized and Sergio
Vieira de Mello offers this quote.
"One injustice cannot be redressed
by another injustice."
For eight Wednesdays, beginning
today, March 20, Hullett's Grade 5s
will be taking swimming lessons at
the Vanastra Recreation Centre. This
program is supported by the Blyth
Legion.
However this being the career path
chosen by Allen, they realize he was
anticipating and ready for action.
Bob Hillis had some misgivings,
when asked how he felt about Allen's
assignment. As a member of the
Royal Canadian Legion, Bob says
the Legion has had a difficult time
convincing our government of the
need to maintain a strong modern
armed force. This was a promise
made to the veterans of the other
great wars. This promise needs to be
addressed by the government, he
'feels. A glaring example of the
unpreparedness is sending troops to a
desert operation in jungle fatigues.
Bob and Annemarie and Allen's
wife Kathy and his two daughters,
Briaana and Alyssa, anxiously -await
his return proudly aware that Allen is
protecting our freedom and way of
life.
