THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 20, 2002, Obituaries ROBERT LYLE MCDOUGALL A celebration of the life of Robert Lyle McDougall (Bob) was held at North Street United Church on Tuesday, March 12, 2002 to pay tribute to a kind and respected resi•- dent of Goderich. He passed away peacefully. at Alexandra Marine anu General Hospital on Friday, March 8 after a courageous battle with can- cer. He was 66. Bob was born on Jan. 31, 1936 in Mount Forest, one of 13 children of the late, Nellie and James McDougall. At age two he moved to Colborne Twp. He attended SS#3 Public School until Grade 3. In 1945 the family moved to Hullett where he attended SS#8. He contin- ued his education at CDSS where he graduated from Grade 13 in 1954. In 1955 he worked as an account- ant for the Clinton Air Force Base. In 1959 he moved to Goderich and worked for Unemployment Insurance. In 1966 he was trans- ferred to Owen Sound for one year. He returned to Goderich as a coun- sellor for Canada Manpower where he remained until retirement in 1991. Instead of completely retir- ing, Bob assumed a position with HITAC frOm 1992 - 1995. Bob was known for his carpentry skills, his love of golf and unique sense of humour. He. was a life member of the Goderich Kinsmen Club and treasurer for Camp Menesetung. He also served on the board for Hope Chapel Cemetery, the, finance committee tor. Community Living and volunteered as a driver for the Kidney Dialysis. He was the best friend and beloved husband of 45 years to Joan (Govier). He was a special father to Larry, Marlene and Steve Huff and loving Boppa to Stacey and Scott. He was predeceased by brothers Murray, Gordon and Ronald and in-- laws Gordon Johnston, Pat Whitely, Joyce McDougall and Dorothy Govier and by parents-in-law Murvin and Margaret Govier. He is survived by brothers and sisters, Eleanor Whitely, Islay Johnston, Marion and Don Kernighan, Donna and Carl Bender, Glenda Gerrits and Bill Kamp, Joan and Bill Crawford, Norma and Gary Preszcator, Doug McDougall, Jim and Marlene McDougall, brother- in-law Murray Govier and sister-in- law Carol and Paul Gross and many nieces and nephews. Donations to Camp Menesetung, London Health Sciences and Alexandra and Marine General Hospital in Bob's name were great- ly appreciated. Bob's true friendship and guid- ance will always be. remembered. "Silence is Golden". BILL SHORTREED William MacDonald Shortreed of RR I, Walton, passed away on Saturday, March 9, 2002 at London Health Sciences Centre, University Campus. He was in his 48th year. Born in Brussels on Aug. 18, 1954, Bill was the son of the late Wilfred Shortreed and Muriel MacDonald and the husband of Valerie Rose, whom he married in, First Lutheran Church, Logan Twp. on July 24, 1976 and from there they started their family of four chil- dren on their farm in McKillop Twp. An electrician by trade, Bill's first love was farming. He was devoted to his family, and enjoyed doing anything and all for them. He enjoyed activities such as travelling, fishing, curling, baseball and broombal I and was actively involved in his community as a past president of the Walton and Area Sports Club, the.Tri-County Sports Club, the Brussels Curling Club and the Walton Hall board. Bill was a loving husband, father, brother, a good neighbour and will be missed by all. Bill will be sadly missed by his beloved wife Valerie and children Jason of Kitchener, Matthew, Bradley and Krista all at home. He was the dear brother of Margaret Mclnroy and her hUsband Rick of Blyth, dear son-in-law of Norma Rose of Mitchell and brother-in-law of Judith Beuermann and her hes- band Warren. of Walton, Wendy Boyd of Kitchener, Sandra Schmidt and her husband Bruce of Tavistock and. Jamie Rose of Mitchell. Bill was also loved by his several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his par- ents Wilfred and Muriel Shortreed and father-in-law Glen Rose. Friends were received by the fam- ily from 2 - 4 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m. Friday and 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. Saturday at the Schimanski Family Funeral Home, 401 Albert St., Brussels. The funeral' service was conduct- ed from Melville Presbyterian Church, Brussels on Sunday, March 17 at 2 p.m. officiated by Rev. Cathrine Campbell. A tribute to Bill's life was given by friend Neil McGavin. Carrying floral tributes were Jim Shortreed, Rob Shortreed, Jamie Rose, and Brian Webster. Pallbearers'were Carman Bernard, Rick McDonald, Paul Cook, Fred McClure, Harvey Hoggart and John Huether. Spring interment will be at Brussels Cemetery. As an expressions of sympath-y, memorial donations to the Spina Bifida Association, Brain Tumor Foundation or to Melville Presbyterian Church would be appreciated. JOAN MILLER Joan Margaret (Hunter) Miller of Brussels passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2002 at ,Seaforth Community Hospital. She was in her 67th year. Born in Cranbrook on Aug. 2, 1935, Joan was the daughter of the late Alvin Hunter and Margaret Pride. Joan was raised and educated in Seaforth where she was a member of the Seaforth High School band of 1948. After high school, Joan attended business college in Stratford. In 1959, Joan married Ken Miller and together they had two daugh- ters, Jody and Stacey. Joan's career included jobs at Topnotch in Brussels and SeatOrth, Vipons of Toronto and Sears Canada in Guelph. Retired in 1998 she and Ken settled in Brussels. Joan will be dearly missed by her husband Ken Miller and her chil- dren Jody Burbidge and her hus- band-Chris of Montreal and Stacey Miller and her husband Michael Ubhy of Markham. She was the dear grandmother of Veronica and Mikaela. Joan was the dear sister- in-law to Marguerite Miller of Guelph. She was also loved by her several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her par- ents Alvin Hunter and Margaret (Pride) (Hunter) McBrien and step- father Secord McBrien. Friends were received by the fam- . ily from 7 - 9 p.m. Sunday at the Schimanski Family Funeral Home, 401 Albert St., Brussels where the funeral was conducted Monday, March 18 at 2 p.m. officiated by Rev. Joan Golden of Brussels United Church. A remembrance of Joan's life was given by her friend Hope Strong and Jennilee Halls sang Amazing Grace during the ,service as a tribute to Joan. Pallbearers were Ken Courtney, Craig Courtney, Cheryl Dodds, Ramona Halls, Timi Post, and Sach Halls. Spring interment will be at Brussels Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Lung Association or to the charity of one's choice.
