PAGE 15. By Pastor Ernest Dow Living Water Christian Fellowship, Blyth Have you ever "rolled out the red carpet" to welcome someone special? In our culture, visiting celebrities are welcomed with bands playing, crowds cheering, presentations of flowers, speeches, maybe even a special parade. Unless, of course, there's opposition for some reason to what the person represents; in that case, they may be greeted by a chorus of protests, pickets, and police dressed in riot gear. This coming Sunday marks "Palm Sunday", one week before Easter in the calendar of the Christian church, the beginning of "Holy Week" - the last days of Jesus' physical life on earth. On Palm Sunday Jesus made a deliberate choice to enter Jerusalem riding on a donkey. Without uttering a word, his decision communicated that he was fulfilling prophecies about the coming Messiah, the God- appointed leader whom Jews had been anticipating for centuries. "See, your king comes to you, gentle ana riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey." (Matt.21:5 I Zech.9:9) Jesus realized such a daring statement would provoke the religious authorities to bring charges against him — charges which would culminate in his crucifixion just five days later. This significant though silent action on Jesus' part triggers three sets of cries - the crowds, critics and the coming King himself. The crowds, already excited by the news of Jesus' dramatic raising of Lazarus from the dead, are quick to pick up on the Messianic significance of Jesus' entry. "Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!" they shout. "Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!" They roll out the red carpet by spreading their coats on the road, and leafy branches from the fields. Soon the whole city is abuzz with anticipation. Subjugated by the Romans, burdened by heavy taxation, there were many who longed for a political Messiah to make the Jewish nation once again sovereign and independent. Also, those who'd travelled from far away to celebrate the Passover festival would be keenly interested to see if this "Christ" would restore religious purity and usher in God's reign of heaven on earth. Critics were present as well; Pharisees and other religious leaders cried out with protests that Jesus must stop the acclamation at once. They did not believe Jesus could be the Messiah; he didn't match their expectations, so they concluded the whole thing was a dreadful mistake, if not outright blasphemy — a man claiming to be God. "Teacher, rebuke your followers for saying things like that!" Jesus only replied that if the crowds were quiet, the stones along the road would cry out.
