FROM BRUSSELS
Girl gets
academic
honour
Brooklyn Wheeler, daughter of
Gerry and Brenda Wheeler,
Brussels, has earned a Silver A, The
Culver Academies' second-highest
academic honour, reserved for those
students earning a minimum
semester grade point average of 3.2.
Wheeler is a junior and three-year
student at The Academies
(www.culver.org). This was her
fourth Silver A.
She is also the goalie on the girls
varsity hockey team.
The Culver Academies are
boarding and day schools offering a
nine-month college preparatory
curriculum for Grades nine through
12. Culver Military Academy,
founded in 1894, is organized
around a distinctive military system
of student leadership while Culver
Girls Academy, founded in 1971, is
modelled on a perfect system.
Through leadership opportunities
within these systems, students
develop confidence in their abilities
to complete difficult and
challenging tasks, as well as habits
of inquiry and self-discipline.
The Academics, with an annual
enrollment of more than 700
students representing 35 states and
26 countries, and Culver Summer
Camps, with an enrollment of 1,350
students, operate on the same 1,800-
mere campus on the north shore of
Lake Maxinkuckee.
WUCC meets
Brussels Evening Unit of Women
of the United Church of Canada
(WUCC) met at the home of Joan
Golden. A hymn was sung with
Betty Campbell as pianist. Mrs.
Golden read a story from the Daily
Bread book.
Guest speaker was Gloria
Workman from the Wraparound
group which develops and carries
out plans for children, individuals
and their families.
By Jo-Ann McDonald
Saturday was busy around the
Legion Branch. The afternoon euchre
had a great turnout with 15 tables at
play. The lucky pair of Mary Huether
and Helen Dobson were the first-
prize winners with 78 points. Coming
in second with 74 points were Tom
and Eileen Sloan. The third place
winners were Eileen Sellers and
Marie Stewart with 71 points. Lucky
lone hand winners were Ed Stewart
and Sally Scott.
The fish fry was also well attended.
Over 150 people were well satisfied
with the meal.
Comrade Glenn Bridge and wife
Jean have returned form Florida and
we put him right back to work by
Well darn the March break is over
for another year. Hopefully it was a
time of renewal and refreshment for
all those who needed, and got it.
Depending on the weather of course,
activities varied from road hockey to
biking, then on to 'vegging' days
with movies and books. Trip to the
city or the swimming pools in the
region and visits to, at or from friends
and grandparents were also an
enjoyable time for many on the
break.
Wearing of the green is one of
those things that just happens and
Irish heritage is not required. The
folks at the United Church enjoyed
each others' company while they
digested green soup and selective
green sandwiches and since they just
came from worship .they didn't
question — they are such nice people.
Valerie Watson of unknovin age (ha,
we do know it was written on the
poster her children made for the
occasion) was the reason for cake
and candles for dessert. Lots of green
garments were in sight as we sang the
sending him to District Convention in
Kincardine on Sunday. Welcome
home.
• • Sunday was also singles dance
night with over 100 coming out to
enjoy the music of the Country
Vei-satiles. The next singles dance is
not until April 14 as we are taking"
Easter weekend off.
Our deepest sympathy to Comrade
Ken Miller and his family on the
passing of his wife Joan. The funeral
was held Monday with the luncheon
being held at the Branch.
Congratulations to Sarah Little for
winning the Provincial youth darts.
She-' will go to Edmonton to compete
May 16-20 for the Dominion
competition. Congratulations.
appropriate song. She can still blush.
I hope you've sent in suggestions
for life after the island. It's been such
fun seeing what life would be like in
a commune with that crew. I think
much like vacation with the relatives
— good but with a definite go home
date. Thanks all you Islanders — it
was fun reading.
Perhaps we could now do an exile
to Cranbrook — you know — suggest
folk who should go there to live. It
could/would keep the regular natives
in line. Speaking of lines — call Kathy
Workman on Friday and sing to her.
She's getting really old.
Check your place of worship or
any local church to be part of Holy
Week. Easter is the reason for
Christianity. The Bethlehem baby
was just a regular person until Easter
morning and so we celebrate the
mystery of life. Come and worship.
A view of tundra swans feeding
and resting last week was a rare treat.
The force of nature is awesome. Well
over a hundred birds were feeding in
a field in Morris -- a brief stop on
their way to — ah the tundra. It
reminded me of Ella Graber and Ida
Evans when they used to make their
many spring tours in search of the
magnificent birds.
Hockey is still happening as the
skills of our young people (PeeWees)
are required for the next two -
weekends in determining the new
Ontario champions. Good Work
team!
Bye now, Betty G. W.
)
The general meeting is March 25
and we urge more members to attend.
Our elections are held in April for our
new officers to start their term June I.
Again we ask for new blood to step •
forward and take an interest in the
Branch.
There are a variety of committees
which •can all use more people.
Choose something that is of interest
to you. •
Think about it and call Comrade
Glenn or the Branch for more
information.
