The Ethel community welcomes
its newest member, Miss Erin
Kendall Eve Lindsay. The young
Miss Lindsay arrived in the morning
on Monday, March 4 to greet her
parents Tammi and Jamie Lindsay of
King Street, Ethel, Mom and baby
are home and doing well.
Congratulations!
The weather this past weekend left
me wondering whether this was the
March lion or lamb! Saturday was a
great day to be outside, particularly
as Sunday was a great day to be
inside! A friend asked about our
power outage in Ethel from the
storm, and to be quite honest, I don't
Mrs. McDowell, Mrs. Blake and
two Grey school student
representatives attended an Awards
and Spirit assembly at East
Wawanosh on Thursday, March 7. At
this assembly, Wescast was
recognized for their generous
contributions to school literacy
programs.
On Friday afternoon, the whole
school enjoyed skating at the BM&G
Arena. While students are now off
school enjoying their March break,
'they have many events and activities
to look forward to, upon their return
on Monday.
Grade 4 and 5 will be starting their
10-week session of swimming
lessons at the North Huron Wescast
Community Complex on Tuesday,
March 19. Grade 7 and 8 students
will be off to Tech 21 in Listowel on
Thursday, March 21.
At the end of the month, the
Scholastic Book Fair is coming. It
starts Monday, March 25 and runs
until Thursday, March 28.
even know if we had a power outage
of any consequence! Perhaps
someone could let me know if we
did!
Finally, I have a short story to
share-one of those moments which
show us how, good life really is.
Last week I was in a babysitting
jam and had to take my three
children to an ultrasound
appointment in Listowel.
My oldest and youngest children
were off in the hospital together
during the appointment and my
middle son was seated outside the
ultrasound room, complete with
bribe candy, where he was told to
stay put until I came out. At one
point the ultrasonographer peaked
out to see how he was doing and
stuck her head back in the door and
with a big grin stated that he had
struck up quite a conversation with
someone out in the hall.
Well, my "city instincts" crept in
and I silently began to fret? Who
was he talking to? Would he still be
out there when I was finished?
Can't this go any faster!! When I
Mrs. Scott's class has been
learning about the letter Z. The
senior kindergartens made zoo
animals with different heads and
bodies. The junior kindergartens
made a zoo booklet. They read a
book called If I Ran to the Zoo by
Doctor Seuss.
The junior kindergartens went
skating on Friday. The senior
kindergartens made muffins this
week.
Mrs. Bowler's kindergarten class.
is learning the letter L and about the
weather.
Miss Hill's class is still studying
electricity. They are learning about
energy.
They have learned their addresses
and their fire numbers, so if they
have an emergency they will know
their home's fire number and
address.
This week Mr. Park's class has
been growing trees with Mr. Perrie's
help. They are growing them for the
Huron Stewardship Council. They
was finished I rushed out, like a
semi-composed crazed mother in an
snappy opened back hospital gown
to rescue my son from this
"stranger"!
"Hi Mom!" he casually said-- as he
turned to his new friend to continue
chatting. There, sitting across from
him was a grandmotherly, mother
goose type woman, herself sporting
a stylish hospital gown and awaiting
her summons from the x-ray
technician. The woman
complimented my son on what a
polite and friendly boy he was and
commented on the humourous five
year old perspective of our life story
thus far. (Ah, from the mouths of
babes!)
She went on to tell us about her
children and grandchildren. She
explained that she had a grandson
about the age of my son, and that he
was in a hospital out of town with a
brain tumour and was not expected
to live much longer. She also shared
with us that she had lost a very
young granddaughter to leukemia
not too long ago.
have been growing them out of
acorns. They are growing 45 bur
oaks and 45 red oaks in their nature
centre.
This week, Mrs. Hemingway's
Grade 3 class has been doing some
St. Patrick's Day activities including
making potato shamrock stamps.
They learned how to write the letter
x and they made some bridges out of
cardboard boxes. They also learned
about different places and people in
Canada. This week marks the end of
doing symmetry in math.
Mrs. Murray's Grade 4s are
working on two projects in art. In
one project, they are using
shamrocks to create overlapping
pictures and in the other, they are
using shamrocks to create positive
and negative pictures. This past
week, they had a social studies test in
Ontario.
The Grade 4/5 class is really
excited about Mr. Walker coming
back after the March break. They
would like to thank Mrs. Johnston
for filling in for him.
Mackenzie Daughterty and
Mackenzie Vanhell went up 'for a
game at the Just Say Moe
presentation.
The Grade 6 class had an excellent
time at the "Just Say Moe"
presentation in Brussels on Monday.
At the entertaining and informative
presentation that incorporated magic
with a non-smoking message, they
learned why the presentation was
entitled "Just Say MOE". The M in
MOE stands for, Making the right
- choices. The 0 stands for
Opportunities of a lifetime. The E
stands for everyday is a smoke-free
day.
The Grade 6s remain busy reading
their Silver Birch books and creating
plot diagrams. In social studies, they
are working on the Wendat culture.
Miss Henry and her class have had
a very busy week. They finished
their tall tale creature writing stories
and had a science unit test. Right
after the March break the Grade 7
class will have another trip to Tech
21 on Thursday, March 21.
For the time being, the class is
looking forward to enjoying their
March break. Their class will he
starting a new unit on ecosystem s
after March break.
They are also doing some review
in math looking at fractions,
exponents and problem solving. In
geography, they are lookinithet
climographs and the tropical
rainforest.
When I expressed my sadncss for
her losses; she smiled and said "I
suppose that's the way life goes,
isn't it? We all have quite difficult
times to go through."
The woman gave a firm
handshake and said "Goodbye,
Benjamin. Thank you for the
wonderful chat"; and then, smiling
once again wished us well with our
lives and our anxiously awaited new
arrival.
My mind sees her face several
times a day since then and I admire
her gentle wisdom and kind eyes. I
think my son and this stranger were
destined to meet that day, if only to
show us the wisdom in the
experiences of elderly people. Or
perhaps to show that there may be
angels among us that only our
children can sense.
Haye a nice week!
