Contois retires from HPCDSB
By Stew Slater
Special to The Citizen
There was just a year between the
dates Ray Contois (1971) and Gaetan
Blanchette (1972) began as teachers
in what is now the Huron-Perth
Catholic District School Board, and
both men progressed through the
system to become principals and then
senior administrators.
Now, within the span of a month,
trustees of the board — which has one
of the smallest administrative staffs in
the province — have, with what
Huron East/North Perth
representative Vincent McInnes calls
"great regret," accepted the
resignation of both men.
A month after Blanchette, director
of education, announced his intention
to retire at the end of 2002, Contois
chose a regular meeting on Monday,
Feb. 25 to issue the same deadline for
trustees to find his replacement.
Contois was the first principal at
Clinton's St. Anne's Catholic
Secondary School when it opened in
1995, then returned to the board's
Dublin offices in 1998 as
superintendent of education.
"(Contois's) work as an individual
and as part of a team has benefitted
this system to a great degree,"
declared Chair Mike Miller.
Past-Chair Ron Marcy, meanwhile,.
remarked that those who worked with
Contois in his various posts "had
nothing but respect for him."
Central and North Huron
representative Mary-Catherine
McKeon was more blunt in her
reaction — certainly to Contois's
announcement but perhaps also to the
fact it came so close on the heels of
Blanchette's decision to retire.
"I wish there were such a thing as
cloning," McKeon offered.
Following the meeting, Contois
explained that the decision to retire
came despite the fact he knew the
chance was there to step into the job
soon to be vacated by Blanchette.
Contois said it was a decision reached
jointly with his wife. She is also a
superintendent of education — in
Grey and Bruce Counties (the couple
lives in Walkerton) — and she will
also retire.
Speaking to trustees following their
words of praise, Contois called his
duties as the first principal of St.
Anne's "a once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity," but added "I always
thought I learned so much from each
of my experiences at each of my
schools."
A native of Midland, Ontario who
attended teachers' college in
Stratford, Contois also spoke of the

reputation which he insists precedes
members of the Huron-Perth board
whenever meetings are held involving
other Ontario school boards. "A lot of
people refer to us as having a little bit
of heaven here," he said, and
encouraged trustees to keep that in
mind as they chose a replacement and
progressed beyond his retirement.
Asked to expand on that comment
following the meeting, Contois
suggested the board's heavenly
reputation is derived from what he
called "a great relationship" between
trustees, administration and other
staff. He says that relationship is
reflected in the work of the board.
Blanchette agrees. And the
outgoing director of education says
that's why the imminent loss of two
top administrators — even from a
board where such a loss takes away a
significant portion of the
administrative know-how — will not
damage the hoard.
"It's a team effort, so there are lots
of wonderful people left to carry on,"
Blanchette said.
