PAGE 25. Wingham to get sports Wall of Fame By Bonnie Gropp Citizen editor A proposal was brought to North Huron council that will see tribute paid to local athletes. Al Harrison attended the March 4 meeting of council to discuss a Sports Hall of It's not Fl Fame, which would be erected at the new North Huron Wescast Community Complex. Harrison said he had brought the idea to Wingham town council several years ago and at that time it was met favourably. "They encouraged me to pursue it and come up with a concept when I had time." Preserving the history of sports in Wingham, Harrison said, is important. "I believe it is important to preserve not just the heritage that we see at the Museum, but this community has a deep history in sports." He noted as examples NHL player Jeff Bloemberg, track and field athletes Doug Wood and Julie Lisle. The fastest car Gerrit Reinink displays his trophy for the fastest Kub Kar and the vehicle that won the award. Reinink won his award at the recent Kub Kar Rally held at Brussels Public School. (David Blaney photo) Harrison also made note of the many learns which have captured provincial championships. He added that with Wingham's 125th coming up, the time was right to get the project started. The wall chosen is about 26 feet in length between the food booth and the lounge. There would be an oak railing before the plaques and overhead lighting. They would be hung with a secure mounting. Designer At the recent Ist• Brussels Invitational Kub Kar Rally Jamie Mitchell captured the best design trophy. His winning entry was called the Limo Express. (David Blaney photo) Harrison suggested three categories, team, athletes and builders. The criteria for selection will be strict, he noted. "There is not going to be every Tom, Dick or Harry on that wall. People will have to earn it." While he said that it was unlikely, being as they have their own arena, that Blyth would be interested in having athletes displayed here, Harrison did note that the honour would extend beyond Wingham's immediate boundaries. Also, he said it was noted restricted to hockey or ball, but sports in general.. • • Induction would begin with probably 12 teams and 12 athletes as well as a half a dozen builders. This would be added to each year. A committee would be struck to review applications then bring a recommendation for approval. "By 2004 it should be a pretty impressive wall." Start-up costs, he "guesstimated" to be $1,500-$2,000 for the railing etc., while plaques would be in the area of $40 per plaque. Noting the contributions from local teams to date, Harrison said he was reluctant to ask for more. Councillor Jeff Howson made a motion, which was approved, for Harrison to continue with the project and that it be included in the recreation budget. It may not be a big money formula but the Brussels and Blyth Cub packs had a great deal of fun racing their Kub Kars. The event was the 1st Brussels Invitational Kub Kar Rally held at Brussels Public School.
