Obituaries
JOHN JOHNSTON
John Alexander Johnston of Grey
Twp. passed away at Listowel
Memorial Hospital on Saturday, Feb.
23, 2002. He was in his 73rd year.
Born in Morris Twp. on Sept. 2,
1929, John was the son of the late
Alexander Johnston and Annie
MacDonald.
At an early age, John's family
moved to the 1st Concession of Grey
Twp. This farm was in the Johnston
name since November of 1888. . •
John enjoyed farming all his life
with his family and was still active
with cattle and chickens. John met
many people throughout his life as he
enjoyed going to auction sales,
dances, church suppers and striking
up conversations with new and old
friends on the street and out shopping.
John would be seen many times tak-
ing his granddaughters out to
McDonald's, parades, suppers and
going to their school concerts. They
were his pride and joy.
He kept up on his daily newspapers,
discussing world events, and listening
to the Morning Talk Show on the
radio.
John served as a member of the
Grey Twp. Fire Department and also a
member of the Grey Twp. council for
many years. He attended St. Andrew's
Presbyterian Church in Molesworth,
where he was very active as an elder
for over 30 years and was previously
on the board of managers and the
superintendent of the Sunday School.
John will be sadly missed by his
wife Leona (McDonald) Johnston.
He was the dear father of Karen Smith
and her husband Jeff of RR2,
Bluevale and loved Papa of Jolanda,
Jenelle, and Janessa Smith. He was
predeceased by his son Kevin in
1994. He was the dear brother of
Wilma Higgins and her husband Ross
of RR5, Brussels and brother-in-law
of Lois Dustow and her husband
Orval of Kitchener and Joyce
Kamrath and her husband Howard of
Mildmay. •
Friends were received by the fami-
ly from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. Tuesday
at the Schimanski Family Funeral
Home, Brussels. The funeral service
was conducted from St. Andrew's
Presbyterian Church in Molesworth
on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 2 p.m. offi-
ciated by Rev. Olwyn Coughlin.
Pallbearers were Raymond Neal,
Gordon Moore, Gordon Edgar, Walter
Rutherford, Howard Mitchell, and
Bob Locking.
Spring interment will be in Brussels
Cemetery.
As an expression of sympathy,
memorial donations may be made to
the St. Andrew's Presbyterian
Church, Molesworth or the Heart and
Stroke Foundation.
John will be sadly missed by his
family and friends as he was:
A man with a heart of gold,
A twinkling eye and a smile for all to
hold,
Arms always opened wide
Sharing with ones now on glory
side.
MARY L. MANNING
Mrs. Mary L. Manning formerly of
Hullett Twp. passed away peacefully
at Huronview, Tuckersmith Twp. on
Sunday, March 3, 2002. She was in
her 95th year.
Mrs. Manning was born Jan. 2,
1908 and was raised on the Wood
farm in Hullett Twp. She was the
daughter of the late Frank and
Rebecca (Townsend) Wood.
Mrs. Manning studied business
and worked at London Life Ins. Co.
For a year she lived in California
with her-uncle and aunt.
Mrs. Manning married her hus-
band Bill in 1932 and moved to her
family farm on the 10th of Hullett
where they raised purebred Scotch
Shorthorn.
She was a wonderful cook and
mother. She loved her perennial
flowerbeds, arts and crafts, theatre,
music, reading and was -an avid
sewer.
She was a member of the United
Church choir, women's groups and
the Institute.
Mrs. Manning retired to Blyth in
1973. She loved to travel and spent
many winters in Florida.
Around 1990 Mrs. Manning
moved to the Seaforth Manor, then
to Huronview.
She was the beloved wife of the
late William Manning and loving
mother of Gail and Harry Lear of
Londesboro and June and Stan Johns
of RR4, Seaforth. She was the cher-
ished grandmother of Dan and Jen
Lear of Aurora, Dave and Lori Lear
of Cambridge, Steven and Kay Johns
of RR4, Seaforth, Richard and
Tracey Johns of Mount Bridges, Lisa
Haines of Toronto, and great-grand-
mother of Sara, Anna, Emma, Evan
Johns and William Lear.
She was predeceased by one broth-
er Edwin Wood.
Friends were received at the Blyth
Visitation Centre, 407 Queen St.,
Blyth on Wednesday, March 6 from
1 p.m. until time of service at 2 p.m.
Cremation with interment of ashes
will be in Blyth Union Cemetery.
As expressions of sympathy
memorial donations to the
Huronview/Huronlea Endowment
Fund or to the charity of one's choice
would be appreciated as expressions
of sympathy.

ROSS CARDIFF
Ross Cardiff of Huronlea Home for
the Aged passed away peacefully on
Monday, Feb. 25, 2002. He was in his
91st year.
Born on June 4, 1911, Ross was the
son of the late Lewis Elston Cardiff
and Ada May Morrison, and the
beloved husband of the late Lena
Stratychuck.
Ross will be sadly missed by his
children Dale Chesher and her hus-
band Don of Brussels, Lewis Cardiff
of Poplar Hill, Victor Cardiff of
London, and Dorene Cardiff and her
husband Uli Ryter of RR4, Brussels.
He was also loved by his grandchil-
dren Darron, Melodee, Vanda, Janis,
Danielle, Lisa, Kevin and Regan, his
great-grandchildren Alexandra and
Liam, his, sister Leota Davison of
Listowel, his brother Clarke Cardiff
of Maple Creek, Saskatchewan and
special friend Alwinna Galloway of
Crediton.
He was predeceased by his grand-
son Christopher.
Friends were received by the fami-
ly from 7 - 9 p.m. Wednesday at the
Schimanski Family Funeral Home,
Brussels. The funeral service was
conducted from Brussels United
Church on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 2:30
p.m. with Mrs. Joan Golden officiat-
ing.
Pallbearers were Darron Chesher,
Kevin' Cardiff, Ron Cardiff, Steve
MacLeod, Dave Galloway and
Harvey Kitchen.
Spring interment will be in Brussels
Cemetery.
As an expression of sympathy,
memorial donations may be made to
Brussels United Church.
