FROM BRUSSELS
At the Branch
100 out
to hear
speakers
By Jo-Ann McDonald
What a wonderful evening at the
Branch on Wednesday when the
public speaking event was held.
Over 100 people came out to enjoy
the outstanding efforts of tge 18
speakers.
There were three categories with
six speakers in each group. The first
group was the storytellers. They
included youngsters Dalton
Hamilton, Kasey King, Morgan
Deitner, Lauren Stewart, Emily
Baker, Zack Watson.
The winner was Kasey King and
her story Hey Little Ant.
The six Junior Speakers included
Lindsay Watson, Derick Bachert,
Brianne Wheeler, Mathew Cardiff,
Tanya Bechart, Kalem
Hammermuellen. The winner was
Derick Bachert with his story
What's wrong with My Mom.
The senior speakers included Jill
Johnston, Yvonne DeWit, Allysa
Gowing, Sarah Garland, Stacey
Holmes, Rebecca Ressor. The
winner was Yvonne DeWit with her
rhythmic accounting of the Saga of
the Donnellys.
The winners advanced to Zone
competition held in Wingham on
Saturday. Although Kasey and
Yvonne did not place, Derick
Bachert finished third in the junior
category. He will not advance to
District competition.
We congratulate all the fine young
people who participated at the
Branch and those who went on to
Wingham. You all did a great job
and keep up the good work.
The general meeting was held
Thursday evening with a dozen or so
in attendance. With a membership of
over 200, maybe a few more
members could try and come to a
meeting.
A motion to donate $50 to M.S.
was approved. The new insurance
prices and explanations had been
explained to the executive by Doug
Sholdice previously and were
accepted and approved also.
Comrade Ross Bennett reported
he had taken three garbage bags of
pop tabs to Elora branch from here.
The pop tab program has been
running for over 10 years and to date
415 wheelchairs have been
purchased through the funds raised
through the pop tabs. These
wheelchairs are available to anyone
having a need, not just Legion
members.
The Branch would appreciate
everyone saving the tabs from pop

Well the white stuff is whirling as
I write this — just to let us know that
we're still in March and the balmy
breezes are not quite ready.
And we're still in the running for
some gold. A pretty fine PeeWee
hockey team with their very proud
parents and fans hosted Cayuga on
Friday and played into overtime to
win the all-Ontario game. On
Sunday when Brussels went to
Cayuga, the boys edged them again
but needed overtime to seek the
winner. These WOAA champs are
playing at 7:30 p.m. in Brussels on
Friday night, so if you want to see
the silver and gold level PeeWee
players come see them play on
Friday. Congratulations team!
Sometimes we forget the
importance of the audience and our
role in being community. Any event
takes on more value when the
attendance is good, when the general
public shows interest and moral
support is shown by people. People
in the crowd offering unquestioning
support are priceless.
It was terrific to be part of the
supporting role in the public school
speeches and in the World Day of
Prayer gathering this past week.
Good work done and we all benefit.
Speaking of supporting — the
island vote is getting pretty tense. It
has kept the survivors on full alert
just keeping up to The Citizen
readers who are very good at reading
between the lines.
It's time to support the local fire
departments as they work toward
obtaining Jaws — not the swimming
kind. So think about writing a
cheque to make our volunteers' work
more efficient. This piece of
equipment is expensive but needed
for the well-being of our community
so be generous and .have a chat with
a fireman from either the Brussels or
Grey Wards.
As you mutter about the snow
squalls check the papers and cuddle
down with the advertisements that
show the seed packages, the tropical
plants and the upcoming garden
shows. Stratford has theirs booked
for this week. It might be worth a
mental health drive.
Enjoy!
Bye now, Betty G. W.
