The community extends deep
sympathy to Lester Burch and
Debbie Campbell on the sudden
passing of Lester's father in Sault
Ste. Marie on Tuesday, Feb. 19.
Sunday, Feb. 24, happened to be
the 65th birthday of Bob O'Brien
from Seaforth. Bob was planning to
watch the Team Canada hockey
game they were playing against the
United States in Salt Lake
City.
Bob O'Brien happens to be the
father of Shelley Smith who lives in
Cranbrook. Some time ago she and
her husband Chris planned a surprise
birthday party for Bob and rented the
Cranbrook Hall for the occasion.
They did not count on this important
hockey game being played on the
day!
Bob was told by his wife that there
was a birthday party for another
family member at his daughter's
house and they must attend.
He persisted in saying he would
stay home and watch the game.
Finally his wife in desperation took
the best line of offense and dissolved
into tears.
"You must go to Shelley's party
for Fred because all your family are
going to be there and you will be the
only one missing."
What could poor Bob do? Oh, All
Right! he said he would go. They
could watch the game there!
Arriving at Shelley-'s he was told
they needed to do something very
important at the Community Centre
first.
Surprise! There were 70 people to
greet him and wish him a happy
birthday. And there were three
televisions set up to watch the
game.
A beautiful meal was served and
Canada won the gold.
