PAGE 10. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 27;2002. Sports PeeWee Dogs skate to victory The Brussels Midget Bulletts hosted Saugeen Shores in their opening game of the provincial playdowns Tuesday, Feb. 19. Saugeen wasted little time making their presence felt as they scored early in the opening period to take a 1-0 lead. The Bulletts responded with the tying goal in the second period. Brittany Campbell sent a pass to Michelle Cook who fired the puck to Rachel Elliott to jam it by the Saugeen goalie. With the score even Elliott then found Danielle Good wide-open at the point. Good fired a hard wrist shot that beat the goalie easily for their first goal of the season. The celebration did not last long however as Saugeen came back a minute later to tie the game 2-2. Both teams pressed for more goals before the end of the period but this one stayed knotted. The next game for the Bulletts was Saturday, Feb. 23 in Aylmer against Belmont, This was another provincial playdown game. The Bulletts arrived with a depleted but determined squad. The Bulletts had to fight for possession of the puck throughout. Nicki Berfelz held the Bulletts snatching away what looked like sure goals for the Belmont team. There was great end-to-end action, and the game remained scoreless through two periods. Then with only 7:45 remaining the Belmont team came in On a two-on-one and beat Berfelz on a onetimer to take the lead. The Bulletts pulled the goalie in the final minute but were unable to even things up. The Bulletts hit the ice gain on Sunday, Feb. 24 for a league playoff game with Alvinston in Brussels. Perhaps inspired by the Canadian gold medal win the Bulletts were fired up in this one. Cook took a pass from Candace Procter and skating by the Alvinston defencemen, beat the goalie with a wrist shot to the top corner of the net. The two teams battled through a scoreless second period, then Cook put the Bulletts up , by two in the third when she skated in alone and beat the goalie through the five hole. Cook then notched the hattrick to give the Bulletts a commanding three-goal lead. Elliott worked a perfect give and go with Cook for this marker with Campbell getting the other assist. The -defence combinations of Sarah McDonald, Good, Nicole White and Jenni Hopf stood tall in this one aiding in Berfelz's shutout. An Ironman profile Cole Stewart was another of the 16-year-old rookies playing on this year's Wingham Jr. C. Ironmen team. For the right-winger hockey excellence is a long- time goal and he admits that he would like to make the game a career if possible. If hockey isn't in his future he is unsure what he will be doing after high school. A native of Blyth, Stewart currently attends school at F.E. Madill in Wingham. The Blyth PeeWee Bulldogs took to the ice in Bayfield, Friday, Feb. 22 in a-playoff match-up. Hayfield found the net first scoring in the opening period. Minutes later Bayfield scored again to take a 2-0 lead. The Bulldogs found the back of the net at 5:13 of the first, when Darcey Cook took a pass from Brittney Peters in the neutral zone eluded the defencemen and deked out the goaltender to narrow the score to one. Cook scored again to even things up finding a loose puck in front of the Bayfield net and firing it by the goalie. Assists went to Kyle Nixon and Josh Albrechtas. Bayfield went up by—one again before the end of the period. Blyth scored early in the second period when Albrechtas scored on a solo effort. With the hosts up by one, Adam McClure, with an assist from Chase Chapman bulged the twine with a minute to go before the first period buzzer to tie it. Scott Phillips and McClure scored in the second, but Lucknow took a one-point lead into the third. Assisting on the Phillips' goal was Andrew McDonald. The visitors shut down their hosts in the final period,- while McClure scored his hattrick, plus one, to seal the victory. Assists- went to McDonald, Shayne Cochrane and Brad McKague. Feb. 21, the squad came out on top in overtime against Goderich away. At the start of the third period, Goderich was leading 2-0, but Phillips brought Brussels within one, unassisted. Goderich answered back soon after, however. In a terrific comeback effort, McClure and Chapman each skated in to tie it before the buzzer. Cochrane and McDonald assisted. Going into overtime, McClure fired in a shot for the victory. The next game is 6:30 p.m., Feb. 27- in Brussels against Lucknow.
