The Christian Farmers Federation
of Ontario is calling for
improvements in the Ontario
government's provincial policy
statement on land use planning.
More specifically, the CFFO is
calling on the government to
legislate stronger protection for the
province's best farmland. As an
additional principle, the CFFO wants
to ensure that future agricultural and
rural development is compatible with
both the local environment and
existing communities.
"Some of the current wording in
the provincial statement suggests
that land should only be protected for
whatever usage will make the most
money in the near future," said Bob
Bedggood, the CFFO's president.
a4T. "But we need provincial
commitments that recognize the
great need to protect the soil's long-
term productivity for the common
good."
The CFFO wants to see the
following improvements made to the
provincial policy statement on land
use planning:
• The addition of a principle that
Canada's Outdoor Farm Show has
announced that four new Expos will
be added to the 2002 program,
providing farmers with the latest,
up-to-date highlights of Canadian
agriculture.
Planning is currently underway for
the 13 expos that will be part of the
exciting line-up for the 2002 Show -
the most ever. Back again this year
are the Swine, Sheep/Goat, Woodlot,
Beef, Ag Fibre, Farm Women's,
Organic, Cover-all Dairy and
Nutrient Management Expos.
The-new Expos to be featured at
the ninth annual Canada's Outdoor
Farm Show, a national agricultural
trade show held in Woodstock,
include:

states areas of prime agricultural
land should be maintained and
enhanced in the long-term for the
production of food, fiber and other
renewable sources. This is
reinforced by a call for a set urban
density per square kilometer before
prime agricultural lands can even
be considered for development.
• Stronger language regarding
municipal adherence to land use
planning. The current wording says
municipalities "shall have regard to
provincial policy statements."
Stronger guidance is offered by
calling on municipalities to "be
consistent with" provincial policy
statements.
• The removal of all language
allowing and encouraging rural
housing severances and other
examples of scattered rural
development. This includes farm
retirement lots, residential infilling,
and residences surplus to farming
operations.
• The addition of a clause that
supports the empowerment of
municipalities to cap the size of
livestock facilities. This cap would

• Eco Expo - eco-friendly exhibits
and a market featuring value-added,
natural products and food
• Life Sciences Expo - a look at
how Canadian agriculture will fit
into the new life sciences economy
and what it will mean for farmers.
"We're really looking forward to
offering another great program at
Canada's Outdoor Farm Show this
year," says Ginty Jocius, president
of Canada's Outdoor Farm Show.
"There many new plans in the
works, which will mean even more
opportunity for farmers to learn
about the latest advances in
agriculture."

the local environment, and

• Changes to Minimum Separation
Formula. Some of the MDS
formulas inadvertently suggest the
creation of rural housing severances
near livestock facilities.
• A better definition of secondary
agricultural land. Current
definitions do not recognize that
productive farmlands in eastern,
northern and northwestern Ontario
also needs protection in the
planning process.
The CFFO is making its call for
changes to land use policies as part
of the provincial government's
review of the provincial policy
statement. Conducted every five
years, the review is carried out to
ensure that the province's land use
planning policies are effectively
protecting Ontario's interests.
