Christians around the world will
be focusing on the country of
Romania during the annual World
Day of Prayer service. Local
residents are invited to join in this
worldwide event by attending a 7:30
p.m. service on March 1 at either
Blyth United Church or Brussels
United Church.
This year's World Day of Prayer
service, written by the women of
Romania, reflects on the theme
"Challenged to Reconcile". The
Romanian women greet all those
participating in this service by
saying, "Bine ai venit", which.
means, "Welcome".
Romania, an Eastern European •
country bordered by Moldavia, the
Ukraine, Hungary, Yugoslavia,
Bulgaria and the Black, Sea, is a
country of many contrasts. Its
population of nearly 23 million is
made up of Romanian, Hungarian,
German, Roman, Jewish and
Turkish peoples. Many people live
in poverty, a result of failed
economic reforms and high
unemployment since the country

With the Heart and Soul
fundraising campaign really getting
underway in the Blyth and area
community, the committee is now
seeking able assistance from the
residents.
The campaign to raise the final
$1.1 million left for the work on the
improvements and expansion to the
Blyth and District Community
Centre has been kicked off.
Fundraising co-ordinator Flan
Cook said an infusion of volunteer
help is crucial at this point to give
attention, to the many details of the
campaign.
"And unlike many other
volunteer commitments this one is
short-term," said Cook. "When the
money's raised the work is done. If
someone' can give us even one or
two hours a week it would be
appreciated."
Anyone interested in giving a
little of their time to the "Heart &
Soul" of the community is asked to
contact Cook at 523-9040; Todd

Ceausescu in 1989.
Yet the country has a rich cultural
,heritage and bountiful natur al
resources, including health resorts
famous for their mineral and thermal
springs.
When you attend the World Day of
Prayer, not only will you learn more
about this beautiful country and its
unique culture and heritage, but you
will also be joining Christians in 200
countries around the world and
2,000 communities across Canada
who' will gather together to pray and
take action in solidarity with the
people of Romania.
The World Day of Prayer has its
roots in an ecumenical day of prayer
organized by women in Canada and
the United States in 1920, This event
became the international World Day
of Prayer in 1922, and Christians
around the world began celebrating
this event on the first Friday of
March.
In Canada, the World Day of
Prayer is co-ordinated by the
Women's Inter-Church Council of
Canada.

SURVIVOR DAYS
VOTE TO WIN!
Deadline: Monday Noon!
on Sunday, Feb. 17 was Lorna and
Randy Fraser. Guest musician was
Margaret Kai. -
Rev. Bannerman showed the
children a rock that was rough and
brown on one side and when -he
turned it around it had a pretty red
colour in the middle. He likened it to
ourselves, sometimes we are rough
and grumpy on the outside and when
you look within there is 'something
beautiful on the inside.
His story to the adults was DV,
God willing. DV stands for the Latin
Deo Volente, God willing.
We can do many things God
willing. We must all work together to
make this a better world and when
our time comes:to leave this world
we will be ready, he said.
Blyth United Church is hosting
World Day of Prayer. Come out and
join us at 7:30 p.m. on Mar. 1.
