Better access to tax credit for farmers
Canadian agricultural producers
who contribute funds for scientific
research and experimental
development will now receive credit
for their investment.
Farm producers now have greater
access to investment tax credits
through the Scientific Research and
Experimental Development
(SR&ED) Program - through an
initiative of the Canada Customs and
Revenue Agency (CCRA) in
association with Agriculture and
Agri-Food Canada (AAFC).
Tax credits will be available to
farm producers who make financial
contributions towards SR&ED
through agricultural organizations of
which they are members. In the
agriculture industry, investments of
this kind are often referred to as
check-offs, assessments, or levies to
finance research and development.
Over the past two years, there
have been ongoing consultations
among CCRA, AAFC, • and
agricultural organizations on the
delivery of tax-based incentives to
farm producers. TheSe consultations
have resulted in the development of
a streamlined program application
process to provide easier access to
investment tax credits.
In order to qualify, agricultural
associations will have to act as
agents for the farm producers in all
matters relating to the SR&ED
Program.
An information sheet is being sent
to agricultural associations
explaining the process.
The CCRA will monitor the
initiative to determine if it is
meeting the needs of Canada's farm
sector. -
As well as offering a potential
boost to agricultural research, the
initiative supports the Action Plan
for • an Agricultural Policy
Framework agreed to by ministers of
agriculture at their annual meeting in
Whitehorse, Yukon in June 2001.
The action plan calls for greater use
of science in Canada's agricultural
sector - to spark new economic
opportunities and the creation of
innovative new products.
