Hundreds of wedding sites on world-wide-web
By David Blaney
Citizen staff
The world-wide-web is supposed to
make our lives easier by providing
quick access to information and ideas.
Although this may not always be the
case, a little careful thought will make
it true for those planning a wedding.
There are literally hundreds of
wedding-related sites on the web but
some stand out clearly from the rest.
The United Kingdom-based site
www.wednet.com is extremely
comprehensive. It provides length
checklists for those participating. The
lists are often split into before, during
and after the ceremony . providing
almost minute-by-minute logistics.
A particularly interesting section
provides answers to questions of
etiquette and deals with every
possible situation. These include: do
we invite the groom's father's
girlfriend even though his mother has
threatened not to come if we do; how
to ask a balking boyfriend if the
engagement is still on; and, how to
handle parents who aren't speaking.
The latest article answers the question
- Is it alright and legal to have a fake
wedding and get married later when
we like our tax situation better?
It also provides a list of both
modern and traditional anniversary
gifts, a listing of birthstones, and for
those who wish to register, a monthly
newsletter.
The only real problem stems from
the fact. that it • uses British
conventions almost exclusively and
its list of -wedding suppliers is
likewise oriented to the UK.
A Canadian site of interest is
www.canadianbride.com. It is easy to
navigate and has an informative
collection of articles. Some sections
require registration but this is not
unusual and is free.
Another Canadian site is
www.frugalbride.com. It is easy to get
around and has a fairly extensive
listing of products and services.
The articles are provided for both
the bride and groom and are
informative and to the point. Of
special interest is a section devoted to
couples talking about their own
wedding experiences. It should help
reassure the nervous that they are not
the only ones to ever have problems
and arguments.
A good section about Canadian
marriage law and name changing can
be found at www.iweddings.com .
They also provide a short article on
the origins of many of the common
wedding traditions. The site has a
curiously incomplete feel but to be
fdir this may be caused by the fact that
many areas need registration to
access.
The site, www.idoido.com
(weddingbells.ca) provides several
interesting features. They have a
wedding task planner, which will
allow you to reverse engineer your
schedule by entering the date of your
wedding. They also provide planning
guides, a budgeteer and information
about how to create your own
wedding website at no cost.
For those interested in online
shopping for wedding supplies
www.njsweddingshop.com is
comprehensive and lists prices in
Canadian funds. They also offer to
help you find items that they don't
have in stock. The site includes some
articles of interest.
A Canadian site that did not
particularly impress was www.the-
wedding-plannercom. serving the
Ottawa area. The articles were not as
useful as those on some of the other
sites. The link to one article left the
reader looking at the front page of The
Marietta Daily Journal, which was
rather disconcertingly topped by a
large funeral home ad.
They did provide some suggestions
for ice-breaking activities at the
reception. However, the popularity of
interactive games with some of your
guests may be questionable.
Most general sites offer the
potential wedding planner plenty of
lists. There are lists of responsibilities
for the bride, groom best man, maid
of honour as well as for parents and
nearly every other possible
participant. A little searching will also
reveal lists for nearly every
contingency.
One of the wedding items
emphasized is what might be called a
911 kit. This is a specially packed kit
usually in the keeping of the best man
and the maid-of-honour.
Suggestions about its exact
contents vary, but all are intended to
deal quickly and easily with the little
emergencies that might derail a
pleasant wedding day. It is interesting
to note that the two items on every list
are headache and antacid tablets.
Several sites offer specific
information rather than general
wedding planning help.
For those in need of a quote for
that special speech or toast,
www.lovepoemsandquotes.com
provides a variety of offerings. Some
may find them a little saccharin but
the data-base is wide ranging and
should provide something for every
taste.
For the speech maker with a taste
for wedding humour there is
www.weddinghumourcorn. However,
if you are slightly untrusting of your
best man's sense of humour I would
avoid mentioning this site until after
the wedding is over. Much of the
humour would be acceptable in any
company, but some might not be well
received by your more conservative
guests.
One selection that is offered on this
site is a clear revelatiOn of how
weddings and marriage havechanged
in the last 100 years. Ruth Smythers'
Advice to Young Brides, written in
1894, should make every new bride
and groom happy they live in 2002.
There are several sites which offer
links to the 'best' of the web. While
providing easy access to numerous
web addresses they need to be
understood as simply one set of
opinions on suitability. Every bride
and groom will need to make their
own choices.
One of these link pages is
www.freeweddingsites.com. Many of
the links suggested offer such things
as free quotes or free trial-offers
which require that you sign up and
really appear to be a way for
companies to build up their mailing
lists.
Some of the suggestions might be
of interest however. There are
programs to help with seating
arrangements at the reception and
programs to produce thank you notes
mentioning a person's specific
wedding present. Others supply free
wedding related clip-art and
information on how to build your own
wedding homepage.
Several sites provide chat rooms. At
these locations you can exchange
ideas with others who are planning a
wedding or are willing to discuss their
wedding experiences with you.
As always with the intemet the best
advice is to shop around and take care
with what information you .provide to
the various websites.
