Steering Committee will be establishing three community
committees: recreation & transportation, housing and health and
wellness. The goal of these committees will be to take what was
heard at the community meetings last fall and turn it into an
"action plan". The Steering Committee is currently seeking
local individuals who are interested in participating; if you are
intrigued by the CSHC development and would like more
information about the opportunities for community involvement,
please leave a message at (519) 527-3020. You will be contacted

APPRECIATION is extended to Frances Teatero - on her
resignation after 28 years of outstanding leadership to the
Hospital Auxiliary sponsored Student Volunteer Program. It is
through practical experience of this nature that students are
influenced to channel their future ambitions to careers in the
health care field. Over the years, many long lasting relationships
have been established with patients and fellow program
participants and a sense of pride and recognition is due to
Frances. Our sincerest commendations Frances! Special thanks to
Linda O'Rourke, RPN who has capably assisted and contributed
to the betterment of the program for the past 6 years. We are
happy to announce that the Student Volunteer Program will
continue; announcement to follow in near future.
MEDITECH a new computerized information system requires
that individuals coming to the Hospital for outpatient
appointments stop at Switchboard to register. Special thanks to
everyone for your patience with our new registration process.
Many thanks to all staff for your efforts with extensive training.

I must apologize to the people I
approached this past week who were
wonderfully willing to share stories
of love and courtship with me for a
Valentine's edition of the "News
Around Ethel". Unfortunately, our
entire family got the flu and I was
unable to get to any "over-a-cup-of-
coffee" research!
Much like the snowstorm queries
of last week, I was hoping to write
some stories about Valentine's Day
and romance in and around Ethel
from bygone days.
In my opinion, when radio ads
suggest that you "show her you love
her this Valentine's Day with a
diamond" suddenly it seems that we
need a little good old -fashioned
romance!
Throughout history February has
long been a month of romance. In
Rome during the 3rd century,
Emperor Claudius II decided - that
single men made better soldiers than
The Grey Central Public School
and Ethel commmunity express
heartfelt condolences to teacher
Chris Stephens-Walker and his
family with the sudden passing of
their young daughter, Sophia.
The school council at Grey Central
will plant a special tree on the school
grounds in the spring in memory of
Sophia. Donations for the tree are
being accepted in the office.
The Ethel store was broken into
sometime Friday evening. Entry
was gained through the front door
and approximately $500 worth of
goods was stolen.
Valentine's Day is fast
approaching and the students at Grey
are looking forward to the activities
planned for Feb. 14.
Mrs. McDowell is looking forward
to skiing at Talisman on Feb. 14 with
Grade 6-8. That day, kindergarten to
grade 3 students will be skating at
the BMG Arena. Next week, Grey is
hosting a basketball tournament for
area schools on Feb. 20. Speeches
will be held on Feb. 21..
In Mrs. Scott's class, they've been
learning the letter U. They made
umbrellas. Kindergarten B class had
pancake day on Friday because they
won't be at school on Tuesday when
Class A will be having pancake day.
Mrs. Bowler's kindergarten class
is learning about friendship.
Miss Hill's Grade 1 class has been
counting down to Valentine's Day
and the 100th day of school. The
class was excited when they
discovered that both events will
occur on Feb. 14. Grade 1 is also
looking forward to the mini-
Olympics they are planning.
This week Mr. Park's Grade 1/2
class has been making robots out of
cardboard. They have also been
counting in math.
This week in Mrs. Hemingway's
Grade 3 class they did the letter T in
handwriting. On Friday, they had an
"artitudes" presentation about
pioneers. They also had a pioneer
test.
In math, they are talking about
solids. In art, they are weaving hearts
and are making Valentine cards.
They have started Valentine activity
centres in their classroom.
Mrs. Murray's Grade 4 students
are having their feast today to
celebrate the end of their busy week
in which they had two tests. They
had a music test which went very
well and a Quebec test that went
okay. They also celebrated the
birthday of Amber Kuepfer this past
week.
Thanks to Mrs. Johnston who has
been teaching Grade 4/5. The
students' hearts go out to Mr. Walker
and his family as they grieve the loss
of their daughter, Sophia, who
passed away Wednesday, Feb. 6. A
memorial service for Sophia
Stevens-Walker was held in
Goderich on Saturday, Feb. 9.
Families wishing to make memorial
donations may contribute to a charity
of their choice. The school council
will be planting a tree in Sophia's
memory.
The Silver Birch books have
arrived and the Grade 6s are reading
like crazy. Students need to read at
least five of the 10. Silver Birch
nominees to be eligible to vote in
those with wives so he forbade
marriages of young men. Realizing
this injustice, it was said that
marriages could be performed in
secret ceremonies at the hands of a
man called Valentine.
When Valentine was found out, he
was sentenced to death. While in
prison awaiting his fateful day, the
story goes that Valentine himself fell
in love with a young woman,
possibly the jailor's daughter, and
penned her a love letter before he
died. It was signed "from your.
Valentine".
Some say that long before St.
Valentine became the patron saint of
lovers, a pagan festival called
Lupercalia was held to honour
certain Gods. The names of men
and women were put together and
drawn in a lottery type fashion, the
unions apparently often 'ending in
marriage.
More than purchasing sofas, cars
or appliances in the name of love,
Valentine's Day must have once
been about love letters penned by the

and patterning.
Miss Henry's English classes have
beefl filled with wonderful
speeches.In gym, they are learning
hand of the one for whom you save
your heart.
I would like to share two of my
favourite love stories with you, in
hopes of inspiring some good old-
fashioned Valentine romance! The
first is the story of my _dear friend
whose passion (besides her husband
and family, of course) is gardening.
One warm spring evening as she
worked away on her perennial beds
her husband quietly came up behind
her, handed her one of the two
glasses of wine he held, took her
hand and asked her to show him
around her garden.
I still smile every time 1 think of
her telling me about that.
The second inspirational romantic
moment comes from my own
marriage and fills my heart
everytime I think of it. My husband
arrived one night after work with a
bouquet of meadow flowers he had
picked at the side of the road on his
way home. They cost nothing and
said everything.
Happy Valentine's Day!
about basketball. They are looking at
dribbling, lay-up shots and passing.
They are looking forward to Tech 21
on Tuesday and skiing on Thursday
in Talisman.
Mr. Payne's Grade 7/8s are
learning foul and lay up shots in
basketball. In music, they have
learned a new song by Bob Dylan. In
science, they are learning about
unicellular organisms like
paramecium and amoebas. In math,
they are starting algebra.
