From the Minister's Study
Finding the courage within one's self
Joan Golden
Brussels United Church
February comes in a few days and
with it preparations for Valentine's
Day. It's a month in which many "I
love you" messages are sent and
received. Red hearts start to appear
large and small, on large signs to
small candy dishes. All the messages
and symbols of love may make us
consider one of its aspects - the
courageous heart.
In the backyard I see small trees
standing bravely in a cold wind with
snow and rain, mixed, beating
against them. They continue to stand
and grow. As I see birds fly against a
cold wind to get to the bird feeders
and find shelter, I reflect on the
courage that must beat within their
hearts toQ. Trees and other living
creatures must be brave to make it so
well through the wintertime.
It is not until we have faced some
winters in our lives, some challenges
and struggles, that we are able to
know our own courage and are able
to understand how brave we can be
when it is necessary to have a coura-
geous heart.
We see courageous people all
around us in our daily lives. These
- are the people who are facing the
unknown in medical treatments but
have a smile and words of encour-
agement to others.
Or people who have told their sto-
ries of pain, abuse or addictions risk-
ing rejection to tell others of their
belief of inner change within them
and their personal relationship with
Jesus.
Courage does not mean just grit-
ting our teeth for an endurance test.
Courage does mean drawing horn' an
inner source, relying on God's
strength to give us the confidence we
need.
Courage means never giving up. It
means believing that we can make it,
not just on our own resiliency but
with the guidance and assurance of
God's love for us, accepting that we
are loved children of God.
Courage enables us to offer for-
giveness knowing there may be no
response, or to give generously of
our time. It allows us to try again
when there seems to be a pattern of
failures, to give our love even if all
the odds seem against that 'love
being received or returned.
It takes courage to encourage oth-
ers but often our courage comes
from others whom God has inspired
to encourage us.
Courage and encouragement are
talked about in the Bible many
times. In the book of Acts, chapter 2
we are told about "new courage from
the Spirit".
In II Corinthians 1: 1-11 we are
reminded of encouragement from
others. May we have the courage to
take time to reflect on our lives to
see where we need courage and to
know inside ourselves how to recov-
er some when we are "running low".
May we find it through some time of
solitude, personal devotion time, or
find it by encouraging others with a
note, visit or call.
In our quiet times may we ask God
to make us aware of the courage and
resilience hidden deep within our-
selves and know that courage is a
gift of God's love.
The Ministry of Community and
Social Services announced in late-
December that it was modifying sev-
eral aspects of the Early Years
Challenge Fund. In light of those
modifications the ministry extended
the deadline for proposals to Feb.
1.
The challenge fund is part of a
provincial initiative concentrating on
the first six years of a child's life.
According to John Baird the minister
responsible, the challenge fund was
designed to "bring to children under
six the best programs for their early
years."
According to Ric Graham the
early year's communio; co-ordinator
for the Huron County Health Unit,
the intent is to produce new and
novel programs to help children and
their parents, Local proposals range
from one concerning attachment dis-
orders to parent coaching and music
for pre-school children.
In answer to requests for simpler
and less restrictive guidelines the
ministry has removed the limit on in-
kind contributions for community
proposals. Graham said that propos-
als with no local money attached
would now be eligible for considera-
tion.
Huron early years steering com-
mittee chairperson Marlene Price
expressed her pleasure at the
announcement. She said, "This
extension will allow all of us to
develop and expand the Early Years
challenge to build partnerships..."
Such items as rent free space con-
tributed by local partners and volun-
teer hours are assigned a dollar
equivalency. This type of contribu-
AMMIINNINIP20111MM\
tion will no longer be limited when
the application is considered. As an
example each volunteer hour will be
considered as a $12 contribution for
the purposes of the application.
Dollars, either real or in-kind, raised
in the community are matched by the
provincial ministry. Funding is avail-
able for up to three years.
The Early Years Centres, which
were announced earlier, are another
aspect of the government's concen-
tration on the first six years of child-
hood. They will provide the public
with information and access to pro-
grams that are developed through the
challenge fund as well as services
that are already in existence.
It is possible to both register and
submit proposals online at
ww w.c hi ldsec.gov.on .ca, but
Graham suggests that anyone inter-
ested in submitting a proposal give
him a call at 482-5119 ext. 314 as he
would be happy to provide any help
and advice that he can.
