He was the much loved husband of Karen (VanBesien) Van Bakel and much loved father of a daughter Britmey Danielle Van Bakel. He was the loved son of Tony and Nellie Van Bakel of RR1, Blyth and loved son- in-law of Marius and Mary Anne Van Besien of RR1, Delhi. He was the loved grandson of Mrs. Martha Van Bakel of Seaforth and Since the 1970s National Non- Smoking Week (NNSW) has focused on providing information about the dangers of smoking, on preventing non-smokers from becoming addicted, helping smokers quit, and promoting a smoke-free society in Canada. Tobacco use is the most signifi- cant cause of preventable disease, killing 12,000 Ontarians annually, four times more than those who die from car accidents, suicide, and AIDS combined. Adults who live with a smoker have a 30 per cent chance of getting lung cancer. Children regularly exposed to sec- ond-hand smoke have a higher risk of developing various health prob- lems such as bronchitis, pneumonia, ear infections and asthma. Supported by two decades of evi- the late Martin Van Bakel (1979), Mrs. Anne Vogels and Gerry of Dublin and the late Paul Vogels (1983). He was the dear brother-in- law of Michelle and her husband Jody Smith and their son Tyler, all of Langton; and Cathy and her husband Greg Rosehart of Tillsonburg. Public visitation 'was dence, the scientific community now agrees that there is no safe level of exposure to second-hand smoke, and those particularly at risk include workers and those with asthma and chronic lung disease. Municipal smoke-free bylaws that provide the public with 100 per cent protection from secondhand smoke in public places and workplaces are what each municipality should strive towards implementing as we work towards a smoke-free province. The 2002 NNSW was launched Jan. 21 to raise awarertess of the harm caused by tobacco use. The week challenges all municipalities across the country to develop bylaws that ban or restrict smoking in all public places and workplaces. Locally, the week will aim to get the community to think about smoke- Monday evening, frciiii 6:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Albert Street, Langton with public prayers on Monday evening at 8 p.m. Funeral mass of a Christian burial was said on Tuesday morning -at 10 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church by Rev. GEORGE MELVILLE JACKLIN Mel Jacklin of Brussels passed away at Huronlea Home for the Aged on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002. He was in free spaces — home, work and public places. Reducing tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke is everyone's business — smoker and non-smoker, parent and child, doctor and patient, politician and private citizen. Huron County Health Unit will be promoting the Hands up for a smoke-free Huron-Perth in the Wingham community on Jan. 23 at F.E. Madill Secondary School and at Wescast Industries on Jan. 24. Also as part of the NNSW, the Coalition for a Smoke-Free Huron- Perth will be promoting Jan. 23 as Weedless Wednesday to promote a one day at a time approach to quit- ting smoking. The concept might appeal to many smokers who may be discouraged at the thought of an entire week or life- his 91st year. ' Born in Grey Twp. on July 20, 1911, Mel was the son of the late Andrew ,Jacklin and Gertrude Stephenson and the husband of June (Elliott) (Townsend) Jacklin and the late Roxy May (Rowland) Jacklin. He was the dear brother of Mildred Wheeler of Brussels and Laurence Jacklin of Brussels. He was also loved by his 28 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and . six time without cigarettes, but who may be able to cope with one smoke-free day. "For those who have been think- ing about quitting, it's a good day to put their plans into action. And for others, it's a good trial run as it is estimated that it takes seven quit attempts" says Sheila Datta public health nurse, at the Huron County Health Unit. Smokers who decide to butt out for the day will actually benefit physically even if they quit for just that day. The risk of cardiovascular • disease starts to go down after only 24 hours of being smoke-free. Information on quitting smoking is available by calling the Smokers' Helpline at 887-513-5333 or the Huron County Health Unit at 519- 482-3416. _ great-great-grandchildren.
